The Orc Creche zone.

Getting in the chair prompts all these level 30 rolls. So I reloaded that save.

And I don't really feel like telling that general I have the sacred item thing.

How should I continue here?

kill your own characters and turn the game off.

If you're unable to succeed the rolls just let Lae'zel sit in the chair so she can take the debuffs instead

Pickpocket the crystal off the general, put it in the receptacle, force field gone.

Does the chair need to be used at all for quest progression purposes? I've been avoiding this area
No, but there is a bonus.

No story related spoilers, just mechanics:

If you get in and pass the checks, you get an ability that lets you use Illithid powers as a bonus action.

I believe it does if you want to make Lae'zel happy, otherwise you can skip everything in the Creche if you really want but she might leave your group

*Or maybe you can just skip that part and do the rest of the Creche and Lae'zel will be okay with that, I'm not a 100% sure

i think it is needed if you want the Lae'zel storyline to continue
but it's not necessary for the game as a whole

Full spoilers.

The chair will always explode, if you miss the rolls you get some permanent debuffs (I've heard patches adjusted this, but I haven't been bothered to read those novelization of notes)

Telling the Dr you either still have the tadpole or have grown stronger will make her hostile, you can fight a small group of Githyanki but the rest of the Creche doesn't care. Telling the Dr you have amnesia or feel better defuses the situation.

If you want to bang Lae'Zel, you should put her in her place and demand you go first. She actually respects it, and it's one of the bigger reputation bumps you can get from her.

Telling anyone you have the artifact is a fight and makes you hostile to them all, fyi. If you want to romance SH you should keep it private.

These are extra spoilers so I'll block them out.

Siding with their "God", the General or the Inquisitor is how Lae'Zel's and the Gith plotline actually develops and are much more vague decisions you need to make, the chair is almost pointless. It's only plot relevance is to show you that the tadpole you have is extra, extra strength tylenol.

Since only from below can one better see the heights.

There are guides on the interwebs for how to pass the zaithisk checks, it's a really powerful bonus especially if you do a spoily thing at the end of Act 2.

You can either fight the Kithrak or show her the artefact, the end result is the same (you go through the locked door and see the Inquisitor.) Also there is a ton of nice loot so it's a good idea to finish the area even if you don't care about Lae'zel.

While this is true, make sure you choose the "Leadership" option and not the "Selfish" one because she'll turn permanently hostile if you pick the wrong dialogue.
Even if you don't do the machine, you should still do the rest of the creche as it has some big developments in Lae'zel's personal storyline (which also has a very close tie to the main plotline as well). Plus it has some nice loot at the end of it, specifically if you finished all of "Find the Blood of Lathander" quest stuff in the temple.

That thing is so ridiculously powerful. I have all the Radiant + Radiant Orb gear on SH as a Light Cleric.

Spirit Guardians? Anything that gets close literally explodes.
Boss? Daylight Goku Beam.
Too many shades in Act 2? Here's the sun .

She's far, far away my most OP character right now and my Tav is a fully decked Paladin.
