There are literally people in this topic defending this, claiming it's the best for waiters, and calling others "gutter trash tier", when the issue is the US culture of exploiting their employees.Well then change the nation. Is not tipping actually going to force employers to pay their employees a livable wage? Or is it essentially a useless form of protest? I'd stop tipping right now if I believed that would somehow directly lead to change.
This just another form of "'No way to prevent this,' says only nation where this regularly happens".
She's mad at the wrong person. It's not the customer's fault she isn't being paid a livable wageThis.
Dinner for two is like 150 bucks these days lol.I took my gf out to the beach to eat and get a drink. An appetizer, one drink each, and a meal for each was $75. I don't remember what I tipped the lady, I let my gf write the tip. She used to be a waiter and I just deferred to her on what to tip. I think it was 15
This.So if a bunch of customers screamed insults at you and caused a scene, you would go "I'm only mad at my employer. Maybe they should have fixed the culture so I wasn't subject to this"?
People like her are one of the many reasons I don't eat out anymore.
So if a bunch of customers screamed insults at you and caused a scene, you would go "I'm only mad at my employer. Maybe they should have fixed the culture so I wasn't subject to this"?What
So if a bunch of customers screamed insults at you and caused a scene, you would go "I'm only mad at my employer. Maybe they should have fixed the culture so I wasn't subject to this"?Are you that shit at this you get screamed at? This is why you aren't getting tips, Erica.
WhatNonsense. Seriously. Anyone screaming at a customer for not paying enough is ridiculous.
Yeah, but that's them buying something for THEM that they worked for themselves. Your boss didn't earn me paying part of your wage just because he won't pay you properly/you don't have a proper job. You're giving a company your own money for them to use as they see fit. How is that not unjust to you? You are giving your money away to someone else for a service.
You're giving a company your own money for them to use as they see fit. How is that not unjust to you? You are giving your money away to someone else for a service.Because one is a product and the other is your wage?
Because one is a product and the other is your wage?Hell in many ways with other companies in the food industry its the same thing its only when you have a wait staff that tipping becomes a problem. You arent t tipping your local McDonalds staff anything extra since they get paid a living wage.
I can explain things to you, but I can't understand them *for* you.
You're giving a company your own money for them to use as they see fit. How is that not unjust to you? You are giving your money away to someone else for a service. And? The person tipped here regardless.
Nonsense. Seriously. Anyone screaming at a customer for not paying enough is ridiculous.I've never experienced any of this and I'm definitely a poor
Incidentally, the reason I don't go is because it causes things like this to happen. And furthermore, it makes waiters have a nasty tendency to treat people that "look poor" worse. Which leads to them getting inferior tips for inferior service, and then they have the same attitude that this hockey person has about it.
Nothing good came from tipping culture, so I just pass on eating out altogether.
Are you that shit at this you get screamed at? This is why you aren't getting tips, Erica. What alternate reality do you live in where employees only get yelled at by customers because they actually suck at their job?
Hell in many ways with other companies in the food industry its the same thing its only when you have a wait staff that tipping becomes a problem. You arent t tipping your local McDonalds staff anything extra since they get paid a living wage.tbh, i don't want to go somewhere and have to think about the person serving me's living situation. I think that's fair enough, right? If I knew a place was paying below minimum wage, I'd choose not to support the business at all. How is it even the minimum wage if people are getting paid below that anyway?
I've never experienced any of this and I'm definitely a poorTry going to a higher end restaurant. I once had a friend rant about it, and it translated to "white people good other races bad," as one of the many excuses for why they didn't give even service across the board.
Both the tipper and the waitress are assholes in this particular situation. That shit happens to servers on a regular basis, so going onto social media for clout is just being an attention hog.Why is the tipper an asshole for giving a tip?
Try going to a higher end restaurant. I once had a friend rant about it, and it translated to "white people good other races bad," as one of the many excuses for why they didn't give even service across the board.I don't even know any high end restaurants
In other words, some waiters and waitresses will be nice to people that think have money and then give inferior service to people they think don't have money.
Why is the tipper an asshole for giving a tip?Everyone knows the standard range. You aren't fighting the system by being an asshole to the server. You fight the system by not patronizing businesses that require tips to fill wages.
Everyone knows the standard range. You aren't fighting the system by being an asshole to the server. You fight the system by not patronizing businesses that require tips to fill wages. But then those waiters get nothing instead
Wait staff are never going to fight for the end of tipping culture because then they would, for the most part, make far less money than they do now.Citation needed
Citation neededCommon sense, basic math, and talking to waiter friends.
Common sense, basic math, and talking to waiter friends.Again an actual citation needed.
Because one is a product and the other is your wage? They are fleecing you for those products and you happily pay them
I can explain things to you, but I can't understand them *for* you.
They are fleecing you for those products and you happily pay themThats not how that works.
Thats not how that works. How what doesn't work? We massively overpay for products for no reason other than for the rich to rake in profit for their bonuses. Why don't we protest that on principle? Why are we conforming to norms instead of pushing for change?
Again an actual citation needed. That line has always sounded like bullshit manufactured consent.

I've spent enough time in America to have vitriol for employers, customers, and even other workers. When you're treated like shit by a customer, you don't go "Ah well I can't be mad. It's my employers fault for not protecting me! The customer is blameless!"
How what doesn't work? We massively overpay for products for no reason other than for the rich to rake in profit for their bonuses. Why don't we protest that on principle? Why are we conforming to norms instead of pushing for change?Because its still goods and services and we are not expected to pay retail workers tips for selling these items. Where as the food and hospitality industry is a weird thing since only specific areas with wait staff its expected to tip them for that is their wages but others its not expected. The only other exception would be delivery drivers are lumped into this and they get fucked hard as well.
How what doesn't work? We massively overpay for products for no reason other than for the rich to rake in profit for their bonuses. Why don't we protest that on principle? Why are we conforming to norms instead of pushing for change?Because your not hurting the rich owners doing that. They don't care if you don't tip the wait staff.
If paying a 15$ tip seems equals to "treating me like shit", then there is something beyond wrong.Customers and employers can both be wrong. Why can't you guys just follow societal norms and fight to change them in the meantime?
And no, it's not the 15$ tip.
"She should take it up with her employer"How the fuck is $15 "getting stiffed"?
Cool, and while we're busy redoing American society, she and others will still be getting stiffed by assholes. Passing laws will remove tipping culture. Employers don't give a fuck about your civil disobedience. You aren't hurting them.
If everyone stopped tipping tomorrow, employers would just wonder why their employees suck so bad at their jobs. It wouldn't fix anything.
Customers have no problem voluntarily overpaying for everything else and helping assholes make profit, but a tip that directly goes to a low-level employee? Well that's just a bridge too far! My money is not for paying other people!
Everyone knows the standard range. You aren't fighting the system by being an asshole to the server. You fight the system by not patronizing businesses that require tips to fill wages. And there isn't anything about fighting a system. It's stupid that if I order a bottle of liquor for $60 and that's the only thing I get, I'm expected to pay $12, but if I buy something for $10, suddenly $2 is fine. Again, this garbage is the reason I don't eat out. Screw people that think that me buying more expensive stuff means their tip should be more.

Not participating is the correct answer for anyone vehemently against it.
