Its not for me, but the flip side is that gym memberships here are cheap enough that 5k would be enough money to pay for 50 years of gym membership. Im not going to be needing a gym membership at 87, if Im even still alive.

Is it to a specific location or can I go to any of the gyms other locations if I move?
The money is probably the better choice (itd take several years for a paid membership to be equal to the 5k immediate money).

I work for a major state college university that has an absolutely amazing Wellness Center that is beyond description. They have absolutely everything and it is all really nice. They spent like $20 million about 20 years ago building and upgrading it.

It is nicer than the city recreation center or any gym I have ever been to. As faculty it cost me $200 a year for access to everything. That is 25 years worth of fee at the current fee. I'm sure within the next 25 years it would go up as I have seen it go up by about $100 in the last 20 years.

You know what, I'll take the gym membership. With price raises that is probably only about 15 to 20 years worth if you take the 5K. It's more economical to take the lifetime gym membership.
