This is a surprisingly common opinion. A lot of the complaints about DS2 come from the SoTFS version being a Master Quest version explicitly designed to be difficult for the people that complained about the base version being "easy". TL:DR, SoTFS is for masochists.
I mean to be fair, it's less that the devs thought the OG "Was too easy" and more that the Devs were not happy with OG and released it to hit a deadline.
When the game director switched the new dude wanted to drastically change and move everything. The end result was a bit of a mess and not very balanced.
Scholar gave them time to actually finish moving stuff around in a coherant way is a lot closer to what they wanted it to be from the start.
