5th edition

Chicago by night.

All of us were new to tabletop RPGs except storyteller but it was his first time being the storyteller.

We played 4 sessions.

Next time we will have new characters and do a longer campaing, in New Orleans.

This is just so much fun, kinda fun that I almost want to fail my rolls as it usually ends up hillarious.

So the series is less focused on combat and more on role playing right? What clan are you playing as? I guess that's it. Glad you are having fun.

Yeah pretty much, there is combat but its not as number heavy as DnD, you pass or fail rolls and up to storyteller to describe what happens depedning on the rolls. We had 3 battles during our 4 sessions. I was Torreador, played a narcissistic selfish ex-actor.

Next game I dunno what clan Im gonna be as we start as humans and storyteller is giving us a choice of some kind. My character will work for several but I hope for Gangrel, but Im open minded for whatever.

How emo was it? I've always wanted to play it, but didn't particularly care for the crowd around here that was into it.

It's as emo or not as the group wants it to be. That said the series has changed over time. Originally it was designed to be "Anne Rice the game" but fans wanted "Buffy & Angel the game" so there's a lot of room for interpretation as it kinda supports both.

Fair nuff. I've spent the last 20 years playing DnD, Pathfinder, Star Wars D6 (west end games), Shadowrun, Warhammer Fantasy RP, and Warhammer 40k (Dark Heresy). It's always been been one I had an interest in, just like I said, none of my core group were interested and the one or two groups around here that play at the local shops were mostly hyper emo late teens and early 20s. Which no shade on them, just a 40 year old dude isn't likely to fit in.

Not at all for us, plenty of comedic scenes, like one used his Awe power to distract ppl in the club by ripping his shirt off and pouring water over all his muscles and flexing.

It depends on the group I guess, we dont wanna play it that emo. There was lots of bickering between our characts however but it was all fun.

Funniest stuff happen during messy criticals like our tech guy accidentally deleting all survailance recordings when he wanted to check it or someone stabbing themselves in the knee.

Currently playing a V20 game, been going on for I think 15 sessions.

A little awkward as it was the one of my fans living in my house and the storyteller roleplayed her like she wanted to have sex haha, but I didnt have time for that :P.

I fed twice, second time I fed and failed a roll so I killed a woman in the Elysium who was already drained and pretty out of it who I convinced I was their mom.

I have only played two games so far myself, pretty lucky with all my hunger checks. Even when using my abilities. Been trying to get a feel for the game so I can start running my own.
If you're not smart enough to survive, you are basically just food for something smarter.
I used to play back when there was only the second edition rules.

How is this in comparison? Are there the Gangrel and Ravnos clans? Or the Assamites? Any kindred of the East?

I cant answer much of those. Havent hot much into the lore yet, Gangrel exist I know. Only played 5th edition so not sure how they differ.

IIRC 5th edition has a focus, even a weird fixation, on having specific 'feeding styles', which serve to largely limit how one accesses blood. It's not like the older editions where, with time, you could stock up a collection of 'Blood Dolls' to cycle through each month.

I just know that they abandoned the lore and history found in the 1st and 2nd editions when they made the 3rd.

And what they replaced it with was hot garbage.

I don't know if they reverted back to what they had in the 1st/2nd editions... or continued on with the 3rd edition crap.

You can feed other ways out of your feeding (predator) type but it wont sate hunger as well, except when you have a flaw where you can only feed on vamps (might be other flaws). My Torreador had Osiris predator type which means they feed on ppl that admire them, fanbase whatever.

But at one point I drank from a blood from a bottle, I roleplayed the heck out of that, how disgusting it was and no point when its not blood from someone that loves you etc. Still remvoed hunger but not as good.

I like the axe they put to the lore tbh, it was a lot to read and track and I thought was the biggest reason most games went from horror to undead superheroes, 5e feels a lot more street level and thematic I dig it as someone who initially was a hater.

I've always been interested in the game (I love the Bloodlines) but idk how it plays. It seems like there's a narrative, but is there like a DM or something?

One, our Malkavian diableried Malanekov from Chigaco By Night, failed some rolls and lost humanity to 2 points and became a traitor for our cotarie. We had to keep a staked Malenkov safe until the sacfice of him the next night.

Yeah there is a DM, called storyteller in this, same function.

Yeah, they purposely limit ones generation to avoid the vampire super hero thing. Heck, the system of blood pool is just gone. Instead you do hunger checks when using abilities in scenes, risking yourself becoming more erratic and impulsive. If you roll well you can spam powers. If you don't...

You also do a hunger (rouse check) every time after sleeping. And all powers cant be spammed in the same scene. Lvl 1 powers dont cost a rouse check however.

As I said, our next campaign is gonna be in New Orleans, we talked avout being modern day like we did our first canpaing. But now we decided New Orleans in the 80s.

Any tips of the setting, how was New Orleans in the 80s?

I only know V20 but I think they still have similar clans to V5. Gangrel and Ravnos are clans (V20 is a little problematic with Ravnos tho), and Assamites are either a clan or like a custom/variant/whatever clan. Not sure on Eastern clans.

I remember the last time I played. We did a Dark Ages campaign, so we could - if we wanted to - play as a much earlier generation Vampire.

So I played as a 6th-generation Ravnos.

And at one point, I used my Chimerstry to create illusions that made the local priest believe I was an angel revealing divine prophecies.

Which allowed our group to operate out of his church (after we defiled it).

That sound fun! Maybe later when we learn more about this world well play something like early gen.

Yeah, he also had the flaw that he can only feed from vampires. I dunno what Fishmalk is tho. He eventually ended up betraying our cotarie (with reasons that made sense).

Yeah like I had a fishmalk in a game where my dour nosferatu who had survived the Congolese genocide and thought humanity needed to prove it was worth surviving was in the same coterie as a malkavian who wore a suit made of dollar bills taped together and walked around with a cane that was a giant candy cane.

Guess which character lasted more than 3 sessions.

Ravnos and their Chimerstry discipline... can allow for some amazingly creative things to happen.

Any time my character was about to enter combat, I'd use it to make myself invisible... and project an illusion of myself 3 feet away.

Meaning everyone would attack my illusion... and I'd be in range to backstab (or feed) on the preoccupied baddy.
