All this really demonstrates is a complete lack of understanding by the GOP presidential candidates of what the republican constituents want in a candidate. They want Trump. There's no deeper meaning than that. There's literally no point in answering any questions if the answer to "Are you Trump?" is "No." DeSantis and Ramaswamy both tried to emulate Trump foolishly thinking that it would be enough but it's clearly not and it was a dumb plan that was never going to work.
The other take is simply that he knows his constituents aren't offended by the slavery answer, bc ya know, they support the idea of the Confederacy.
