W o w

I am late on a lot of classic horror movies, like I only watched Hellraiser and Halloween in the past couple of years, but this was easily the best. The set design was perfect, acting was perfect, it was a little slow but damn if it wasn't tense.

Only two questions I had at the end -

1) Early on they (or Ripley?) realizes that the radio message they received was a warning message. Do later movies explain who exactly had put that warning out there?

2) What was so special about that darned cat that everyone wanted to save it and make sure it was taken care of? Ripley risked everything just to get the cat back.

Also as I'm typing this up I realize it's not the end of the movie lmfao, I was wondering when the alien would show up again in the shuttle.

What's up with its friggin' mouth too why does it extent like a meter out

Bruh thats awesome. I saw the first Alien way too young, scared the fuck out of me. As an adult I love the movie though.

Very much watch Aliens! Its great as its own thing that builds on the first.

The rest of the sequels are dodgy at best. I like them but I can appreciate a movie even if its bad.

I wish I saw this when I was younger, though I did grow up with X-Files and a few other freaky things I guess.

Loading up Aliens now. I will probably watch the whole series unless it gets too shitty like I thought Halloween did (sorry @ Halloween fanpeople but how many times can you release a movie about a deranged murderer escaping from an insane asylum going to kill a family member in the same town while his psychiatrist tries to convince the police that the murderer is going to murder again and the police brush it off?).

Alien is one of my Top 3 flicks of all time.

It's near perfect.

After you finish the movies, play the first person game. I think it acts as a bridge between the first and second movie.

I can't remember though.

I've heard fantastic things about that game but I am too terrified to try it. I am bad at horror games in general (ironic since it's my favorite movie genre).

Honestly, the Aliens series is pretty good overall. I don't consider any of the movies to be bad.

Alien3 is honestly underrated. I can see why it is controversial, yet I still liked it

Alien Resurrection is probably the weakest, but it has a good cast and it does some cool stuff.

Don't skip Prometheus or Alien: Covenant
Your face looks like I need a beer.
Only a few minutes into Aliens, already a little bugged by the writing. It's already more complex than the previous movie and... that introduces a glaring problem as Ripley recounts her story - no one believes that she actually encountered any hostile aliens, but she doesn't mention the fact that there was an order for a robot to specifically collect the alien... wouldn't the company have a record of that?

Nevermind, getting into the dialogue with the space marines and that shit is hilarious and sadly accurate.

My personal preference for the Alien, Predator, and crossover films, from best to worst:

Aliens
Alien
Predator
Predator 2
Prometheus
Prey
Predators
Alien: Covenant
Alien Resurrection
Alien 3
AVP
The Predator
AVP Requiem

It's because the company brushed it off by claiming that it was just a malfunction. The ship and cargo were gone, there was no way for Ripley to prove anything.

The tie-in video game for the original Playstation is one of the best Alien franchise video games, hands down. I highly recommend it.
Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images.
How does Predator tie in to this? I know of "Alien Vs. Predator" but always thought Predator was more like an action series, and I thought AvP was sort of like a Freddy vs. Jason sort of thing. Is there more overlap to the lore?

I love that they replaced the cat with that girl Newt in Aliens. I guess it's more compelling - I understand why they care more about backtracking to save a girl than why Ripley risked everything for what really seemed like a random cat, though tbf I love cats myself so idk.

And they are escaping an exploding facility yet again...

If I had the chance to save my dog from death, I'd do it every time.

By the way, are you watching the director's cut of Aliens? That one is better than the standard theatrical...
I'm not sure, I bought whatever is on Amazon (it just says "includes bonus content" and has an extra three hours of playtime).

I'd also save my cats from death. Jones in the first movie just felt kinda hamfisted in there though >_>.

edit: Looks like I am watching the standard release, they do have a separate "Special Edition" that is 2:34 long.

Both films are 10/10.

She saved the cat because it was a humane thing to do.
The warning beacon is a trope as old as anything. It may have been sent out by the crashed/derelict ship but it's never explained and it may have just been created solely by the Weyland-Yutani company as a red herring for the Nostromo to go down there.

Personally, I think Aliens is better than both Terminator films.
It's been so long since I've seen Terminator 1 and 2 (and those are the only ones I've ever seen), so I can't really compare, but I think both series are enjoyable in their own rights. Alien has the benefit of a much more straightforward plot where they can focus on manipulating your emotions through the set design, action and tension. I remember Terminator being exciting, but I think some of the Skynet and time travel stuff got a little convoluted/sloppy.

I really should go to bed but I also really just want to watch Alien3 now lol. Not like I have anything important to do at work that I need to be awake for.

sorry just read your response again that it was Aliens specifically. That one had better writing than the first one, and more down-to-earth writing. I don't remember Terminator's all that well though :\

It was a good flick, just hate that they recycled aspects of the original movie. And also the last 15 minutes could have been avoided if Ripley just didn't go on a rampage on the momma alien's egg nest thing.

If you're going to watch Alien 3, try and watch the assembly cut as opposed to the director's cut. I'm not a fan of any version of Alien 3 but the assembly cut is the better version.

The same people owned comic book rights to both series and it proved popular enough to spawn a video game series and later movie. There's not much more connection than that.

Predators are hunters that collect the skulls of their victims. In the second movie, we are quickly shown a wall filled with different strange skulls. One got the same form as a Xenomorph.
This was just an easteregg, but Dark Horse had the rights to publish both Alien and Predator comics, and they started to do so many crossovers. Basically Predators plants Xenomorphs on planets and hunt them for honor. Some times humans gets in the way.

The predators hunt the aliens as part of a right of passage. Started with a short story in Dark Horse Presents in 1989, then a xenomorph skull trophy as an easter egg in Predator II, and it just kept going from there.

Loved the old Dark Horse comics. Used to get the trades from the library. Was going to try and get them but they are stupidly expensive as marvel own the rights now so the old trades go for a lot. The predator ones were pretty cool. They had one where a human joins the predators thst was a good arc.

Tbh, I think Alien and Aliens are both perfect films. Terminator 2 sags a bit. I watched them all recently to compare. Even Aliens has iconic lines to use against Terminator 2 (T2 obviously wins on that front but Aliens is not empty handed).

Terminator 1 I have not seen in a while tbh so I am not including it in that.

Alien = Aliens > T2.
Alien has pretty much no fat to trim whatsoever. It popularised a huge amount of stuff, looked incredible, was scary, was almost revolutionary in the makeup of the cast and plot relating to that.

Aliens is a longer film by a long shot but is similarly slim with little to trim - I don't think the normal version has anything that you would cut.

It makes great use of a big cast, it's still scary.

Repeating the ending sequences is not an issue for me because, in my view, Alien pretty much created those 'escape the self-destructing ship in t-5 minutes' things. To use it again was an homage.

That all got started in Predator 2 when there was a xenomorph skull on the predator ship. But as far as in the Alien films themselves, it never comes up. The AvP films are their own separate thing, but there are books and comic books that I've heard are pretty good.

Alien is outstanding. While I prefer Aliens, I won't disagree with anyone who puts Alien at the top of the list.

May I suggest you watch John Carpenter's The Thing also. Because, this is very a controversial opinion, I think The Thing shares some similar beats as Alien... And does it just a little bit better.

Oh, and on the subject of AvP, the AvP2 video game is abandonware, so I highly recommend checking it out. It's also the best game in the series IMO... you even get to play as a facehugger and a chestburster.

My understanding of what happened is that WB bought the game developer and didn't secure the rights for the game and also didn't want to have to give Fox a piece of the pie for every copy sold, so this game just got ditched.

Back to Alien 3 - whoever decided they should cut a normal scene into half-second sequences and splice it with credit slides that last like four times as long should be fired. Think I was getting sick there for a minute.

also lol @ how they just unceremoniously killed the two characters like that. Haven't seen such a disappointing twist of events between installments of something since Sliders.

Finished 3 and Resurrection.

3 was pretty meh. The setting was boring, the characters were mostly forgettable, didn't really build any sort of tension and didn't develop the universe at all. My favorite part was after the doctor gives Ripley the shot after a deep personal conversation and then the alien comes down and rips his head off.

Resurrection was awesome. More action than horror. Characters were all fun and interesting. Loved that they kept you guessing with everything, like they just relentlessly offed characters at random so you didn't know who was going to make it to the end. And you assumed Ripley was good but even that was in doubt. Also a lot of weird, memorable moments, like when she finds the previous clone experiments, and when the queen births the crazy ass human-alien hybrid that thing was freakier than anything else in the series so far.

That's the hardcover omnibus which are always super expensive and bulky.

This is a better option if you want something cheaper:

That's the only one out so far unfortunately, nothing for Predator yet unless you want to stick with the omnibus format.
