Have never played it but it looks fun and I'd like to give the series a chance. Started with an elf mage but that's normally not my thing, wondering if there's a better story to play through or if it really matters?

Human noble has the most relevance to the plot

Dwarf noble
Dwarf Commoner
Human
Elves

That's my ranking for all of the ones I did/cared about.

Also instead of double posting I'll reply to the post above mine here's comment. Human noble ties into the overall plot, Dwarf Noble gives a ton of background to an area of the game where a large chunk of gameplay occurs.
Either Human Noble or possibly Human Magi.

Human Noble sucks. Go for either of the Dwarf one's, and avoid Dalish Elf the most.

Dwarf commoner was the best one
human noble intro is kinda boring but like others said most relevance to the plot as stuff pops up later on. I don't recall it happening as much with the other origins which is probably why people think its purely an intro choice

The human mage turns out to be a relative of the protagonist of dragon age 2, but I don't know if/how that factors into anything in Inquisition.

as I see it the origins are divided into 3 themes, each with a simple talk and fight option and a slightly more complex option (which may involve simple puzzle solving).

theme 1 "Elite fallen from grace"
"simple" - Human Noble "complex" - Dwarf Noble

theme 2 "underdog born to poverty"
"simple" - city elf "complex" - dwarf commoner

theme 3 "outsider" - someone outside of mainstream society
"simple" - Dalish elf "complex" - Mage (human or elf)

all origins have follow-ups later in the game - the human noble and city elf are more closely tied to the main story, the others are more regionally based.

male numan nobles get the option to marry into royalty
Personally I prefer the intensity of the city elf
"Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did She die in vain?"
Can't go wrong with either Dwarf honestly.

Responses are all over the place though Elf Mage seems pretty underwhelming lol

tbh might be best to just make characters for each origin until you find one you like

I decided to roll with Human Noble - Warrior, since it seems pretty noteworthy for the entire series based on responses here and some additional research online.

I love the blood effects in the game, like when I fought rats with my dog in the pantry and then in the cutscene the dog's all bloodied and smiling and stuff.

Cleared the Wilds area on the way to the trial, think I hit all the side quests there (the demon fight was pretty underwhelming though).

It's a fun game, reminds me a little of the original Witcher mixed with Baldur's Gate.

Now an even more important question - Morrigan or Leliana? Morrigan's got that secretly sexy and potentially soft under a cold, hard outer shell thing going on. On the other hand she can shift into a giant spider so that's kinda creepy. Leliana seems a little more warm and inviting and she has a thing for heels and cute feet, but she talks a lot about the "Maker".

No spoilers on this one please, just find this to be an interesting deliberation.

I love how every other quest lets me choose "give me a kiss and a smile!" as a reward option.

Morrigan because Claudia Black is awesome and that's the closest you'll get to fucking her

morrigan disapproves

omg she disapproves of everything. I love her snide remarks, like "what, are we going to go save kittens from trees now?", but damn it is annoying that virtually any time I take a quest she disapproves

Yeah... She's one of those 'everything I'm not personally interested in sucks and should be avoided, because I said so' types. If you have the DLC you could just throw the mindless presents her way to maintain enough 'kiss ass' points for her to stick around despite her behavior.

Haha love Morrigan.

Also, the reason it feels so similar to BG is Bioware made BG1 and 2.

DA:O was a spiritual successor to those games before going off and doing its own thing in the sequels.
Yeah it definitely feels like BG except much more approachable, I don't think I made it halfway through BG1: EE (I suck ass at this style of RPG).

Dwarven Sexhaver
My expectations they are low
But you're the sun you make them grow
Progress is slow, I just did the Grey Warden DLC to take back the Peak place.

Now I'm trying to do the Radcliffe questline. It was listed first so I figured it would be easier... pretty sure all the named NPCs who can die did die in the nighttime defense mission lol. I paid the cute girl at the tavern 500 silver to go get a new life though.

Made it into the castle, pretty sure I made a bad decision to use blood magic to save the possessed kid, I don't even like kids and the mom is hotter but oh well.

It'd be the Dwarves or Human Magi
"They don't decide who you are, you do. You are who you choose to be."

I appreciate the response but I have moved forward with human noble warrior. I also didn't realize I was going to be presumably the younger son of some king dude, and I actually decided to make my character look older with grey hair and beard which I never do, and it is just really awkward.

Now that you've done that you do have an option to(spoilers for the end of that quest) bargain with the Desire Demon, which can unlock Blood Magic for your player profile for that and future characters to use . There are a few other selfish options you could do, with their own benefits.
"I'd rather betray the world than let the world betray me." -Cao Cao
I didn't get that option, but maybe it's because I drank the mystery concoction that grants you blood magic in the Grey Wardens tower DLC? I honestly didn't even know what it did, found the book just next to it right after drinking it lmao.

That isn't really blood magic, you can get those abilities regardless of whether you're a mage or not.

And you couldn't have learned blood magic from the demon anyway because your Warden isn't a mage. It's only available as an option if your Warden is a mage and goes into the Fade themselves.

Female city elf is awesome and definitely my favorite. Though dwarven noble will let you start with the most money.

Still making my way through the Mage's Tower, about to enter the Harrowing Chamber.

In my dialogue I told the trapped Templar that I wouldn't risk killing innocent people a dozen times, and then I said that I don't fear Maleficarium they should fear me and I guess that pissed Wynne off and she attacked me lmao. Good thing I had that autosave...

Ok resolved the Circle of Mages quest - opted to save the mages in the tower, just... seemed like the normal thing to do? idk.

Still have to find some ashes for the Arl to snort and the other two I don't even remember what they are any more.

Dwarves and Dalish Elves.
Those are the two! Or were, I was able to get through the Dalish elves story tonight. Definitely did not expect werewolves in this game lmao

Who'd you side with?
human noble or dwarf something

I decided to convince Zathrian to surrender/off himself to resolve the curse, so the humans came back and the second-in-line at the Dalish clan took it over.

Do you have the Ultimate Edition or whatever it's called? You can go to that merchant guy (who has the enchantment kid with 'im) and buy stupid items that drastically raise/lower approval for characters. I think Morrigan likes the Alistair hand puppet or something. That's how I maxed out her approval fairly early on, and you can do the same with others.

There is a missing origin that was supposed to be in but got cut. Human Commoner. I think you were going to be from a farm family. And then the farm probably gets razed to the ground
I tend to play an Elven Mage so that answers the question, there's no background choices to make if you're a Mage.

I heard about those, but the default gift items I find seem to be more than enough. I was also gonna do all the side content before I hit the point where you can do like a hundred quests for a thousand different guilds and then I noped out of that.

Are the expansion packs (at least Awakening) worth doing if I'm gonna play 2 and Inquisition?

I slept with Leliana, I love how they just do it in the middle of camp with everyone standing around, also her O face was definitely a little creepy.

I played through a few months ago. Awakening was alright and rather substantial; Leliana's Song sucked; Return to Ostagar, Stone Prisoner and Warden's Keep were short and sweet; . Didn't do a few of the other DLCs, though, because I no-lifed the game for what felt like 100 hours, lol. I hear Witch Hunt is good, though.

If you're in a hurry, just do the short ones and Awakening and skip the others. Return to Ostagar is just a small detour where you get some armor. Could probably skip Warden's Keep, too.

nooooooooo! do all of the expansions. they are all worth doing at least once, if only just to experience them. except for the Darkspawn Chronicles. there was absolutely no point to that.
It don't matter. None of this matters.

Golems of Amgarrak was a pretty painful experience. Maybe don't do that one either.
