Dunks would help that though. It's painfully obvious the women aren't athletic like the men. Yes, I'm sure there people who would still dislike it because of other reasons, but the main issue is the lack of athleticism.
This aint the 90s tho. Literally no one cares about dunks. People want to be chef Curry from downtown which the WNBA has plenty of.

Youd be surprised at the level of athleticism in the WNBA that doesnt involve dunking. The ball movement makes it a much more aesthetically pleasing form of ball too.

The main issue is cultural stigma that has been compounded by it being seen as a woke league thats being pushed on us. Every single post about the WNBA by ESPN is flooded with thousands of comments describing what they ate for lunch or crying about how theyll never have this league pushed on them.

The issue isnt dunks and idk how to fix it as gambling has been the only successful gateway.

Lol. We have the AFLW (football) here, the scorelines in men's games regularly look like basketball (i.e. 90+ pts @ 6 pts per goal) that ended in 17 - 9. One team got two goals (2x 6pts) and some behinds (5x 1pt), the other team got one goal (1x 6pt) and 3 behinds (3x 1pt).

For some reason women's sports are really at the bottom of the barrel. And scoring in this game isn't hard. You just kick the ball between the posts. That's it.

is there even a point to dunking besides looking cool and tooling on the other guys? I thought layups were like a 100% thing

I also don't watch basketball tho

although I guess if you can dunk that's probably also a 100% thing

Yep, but its now out of vogue since even the opposing team cheers getting dunked on because it wasnt a 3 pointer so its a wasted possession.

I'm well aware a section of people hate the WNBA because the players are black, lesbian, or black and lesbian, but those people will hate it regardless.

There's other people, like me, who dislike it because it's an inferior product compared to the NBA. The players aren't as strong or athletic, and the basketball is boring as a result.

There's no solution either, because it's impossible to mask the difference between men and women's basketball.

And my point about dunks was that they would come as a result of more athletic and stronger players, not that simply adding dunks is the solution.

That section makes up a big chunk of the consistent/invested people US sports leagues rely on.

And without that audience, a casual fan isnt going to pick up interest in something that has no following.

Is that really the reason tho. How much WNBA have you watched? You can be honest theres no judgement here I just like conversation about this stuff.

Because the difference in athleticism is even more noticeable in womens soccer. The field isnt scaled which makes it more apparent how much slower, less explosive, and less stamina they have. The difference is: 1. Its national. 2. Everyone has a daughter, niece, or cousin that played soccer as a kid. So less unjust stigma of it being black/lesbian wokescolds that makes you soft for enjoying it. Tennis is also national and has a longer history. The athleticism just doesnt seem to be the larger problem.

And my hot take has been basketball is one sport where increased athleticism has made it a worse product. The meta is watching the one unfair athlete you have play boring hero ball unsuccessfully until he kicks it out to a bunch of dudes standing around playing a game of HORSE from half court.

VS what should be a balanced meta with beautiful ball movement as intended.

WNBA is boring and the product is bad. How things are set up, it doesn't really show off the skills of the players. Many times, it shows how unskilled they are with how high the basket is. This isn't some shot at women sports. I enjoy women's Tennis, Golf and Softball. Others enjoy Soccer, Track, Gymnastics and Xsports like Snowboarding. Those all seem to be more popular than Basketball because they are more fun to watch.

I feel like this just doesn't jive with the reality of the modern NBA. There's more off-ball movement than ever before and the pace and space concept that's taken over the league relies a lot on ball movement. The true era of "one guy goes to work while others stand around" was the iso- and postup-heavy 90s/early 00s.

I don't wanna call it an inferior product, as new standards make for a distinct variant of the sport. That being said, it is plainly less exciting for anyone that isn't a major basketball nerd.

You get consistent off ball effort in the playoffs which I still enjoy. Im moreso complaining about regular season where its one guy goofin and/or everyone is able to stand around behind the line and drop a 3 no matter what position they play and theres nothing you can do to defend it without insane unsustainable effort that is reserved for the playoffs.

The pace and in season tournament were both adopted from the superior WNBA product.

Their rims are fine.

The issue is that you arent getting uber athletic women in the WNBA yet. Its still a relatively young league and women have gravitated to other sports athletically. More women dunk now in the WNBA than before and soon you'll start seeing more freak athletes in there
This seems like the most accurate statement. Early on, the athleticism of the NBA wasn't impressive. Having a look around I am seeing shorter female NCAA players dunking, and I feel like with proper training the next generation could really show out.

Not to defend the "sex them up" crowd, but are there really? Pretty much every popular women's sport, that I can think of, is coupled with a notable amount of sex appeal.

I mean, agreed about the defensive effort required, and of course that ramps up in the playoffs. But no, players just standing around off-ball is just not how the game is played, even in the regular season.

I think people overrate the "sex appeal" in tennis. And really, how many men are watching women's volleyball? Like actually regularly watching matches, not just the occasional clip online. I'd have a hard time believing its viewership is anywhere near women's soccer.

The Austrailian women's basketball team wears those tight one piece suits during the olympics all the time and no one here can name one player on their team without google.

So the argument that they'd watch if they wore revealing outfits is a dumb joke and a lie. Just pathetic men shitting on women for no reason

Ill admit I stopped investing myself in regular season NBA around 2019. I watch the entire playoffs and a handful of regular season games. The effort I still see is uninteresting and I understand why but dont mean I gotta watch.

Im most impressed they got the players to buy into the WNBA style in season tournament.

Before the NBA adopted the WNBA/FIBA shot clock guys stood around taking a break to dribble 20 more seconds in the possession. Now they cant do that and the increased pace has teams dropping 150+

Volleyball, soccer, track.

The average height is 6'0 in the wnba. The average height of a soccer player is about 5'8, volleyball is 5'9. When i played sports all the basketball players doubled as volleyball players on the side. They arent all flooding to basketball.

Almost none of the athletes from the sports you mentioned are going to dunk. Average vertical jump of the NBA is 28 inches, WNBA is like 19 inches. D1 Womens volleyball is barely higher at 18-20 inches on average. The average height in the WNBA is around 6 2, and in the NBA 6 6. As previously stated volleyball is around 5 9-10.

There is no secret crop of female athletes in any sport that is going to be able to dunk consistently. Its always going to be onsies and twosies that will have the ability as long as the rim is 10 tall.

What? The NBA has had the 24 shot clock since... 1955? Something like that.
If you mean the clock resetting to 14 instead of 24 after an offensive rebound, that's something the NBA chose to implement in the WNBA and G-League as an experiment for a year before bringing it to the NBA itself. And it has a pretty miniscule effect considering 1) teams only average about 10 offensive rebounds per game, and 2) something like 80% of offensive rebounds already resulted in the next shot going up within 5 seconds anyways. The average # of possessions per game rose from about 97 to 100 the year that was implemented, and has settled back to about 99. Scoring has been on the rise (and was already on the rise before that) because of the prevalence of 3pt shooting and the way defense is officiated.
