It was in part because of Coke's high popularity that it was like how "Google" is used for searching something online, "Band-Aid" is used in place of bandage, or "Nintendo" is used in place of video game console: there is a portion of the population of extreme brand reverence that they use a particular, usually the most popular one (and almost assuredly the particular one they use/consume), in place of the name of the thing that they are dealing with.
The brand is Coca-Cola, as is the drink.
