Yeah I used to be in the Ray Kurzweil singularity camp too, and then you see how quickly it devolves into what is essentially tech based religion with all of these grand promises in the near future with little evidence to back it up

And this is how we aren't remotely close to actual autonomous vehicles that operate like or better than a human in any environment even though it's been promised yearly by the likes of Elon for almost 10 years now (I think he finally shut up about it when he started the Twitter shitshow). We haven't tackled driving yet after 4 decades (DARPA first demonstrated off-road autonomous vehicles in 1984), so I'm wondering why anybody with a functioning brain thinks superintelligence is right around the corner.

For background, I have a PhD in computer science and do military research on autonomous robotics and NLP.

These people are invested in being cutting edge/ahead of the curve and smarter than everyone else.

They're also invested in individualistic/capitalistic solutions and opposed to true collective action that's not focused on profit.

They're also invested in being on top in whatever techno utopia/cyberpunk dystopia results from NFTs/crypto/blockchain/AI.

Those are the common denominators and why literally the same people push all of these concepts. If you understand these three things, you'll be able to easily predict the next obsession.

I know a lot of them and I always talk about how much I don't trust AI just to set them off. Yesterday, I got a 10 minute lecture/rant about how AI is going to revolutionize every aspect of life and the only people who don't like that are poor/uneducated people who will be put out of a job and/or think Terminator can really happen. They're nuts.

interesting to hear, I really appreciate it. Im not involved with computer science at all or anything like that but I will relate that working with automation in R&D the difficulty with PLCs alone has always made me wonder how the hell we expect to make a jump to AI anytime soon.

very different of course but still.
