Recently started playing this game again and goddamn it SLAPS. The story is like they put some random concepts in a blender and then forgot to put it in the oven, but the gameplay is somehow so good that i dont even care.

Anyone else love this game?
Really excellent game whose connective tissue was evidently in development hell and finally rushed out to get their hands clean of it. Which is why an Apocalypse style edition would be huge.

A half sequel with more varied environments and a competent story could legit be one of the best rpgs of all time. I already rate base SMTV highly even with all of its problems. It has so much potential to build off of
Yeah i feel the same about SMTV.

The story sucks but the gameplay is mostly fantastic. The weird level scaling is the only big problem.

Apparently SMT 3 is the really good one on Switch. According to the sweaty youtube SMT video makers. Accordingly, I have SMT 3 and SMT 5 in shrink wrap while I slog through the worst side quests ever designed in TotK.

Yeah the level scaling is really extreme in this one. I do like that they hand out the demon leveling items like candy so you can mitigate it pretty easily tho.

FUCK NO. SMT3 is great, but the switch port is a miserable excuse for a port. Theres lag for every goddamn attack.

3 and 5 share a lot of DNA. But 5 letting you approach encounters at your pace is a pretty big difference. SMT3 is the game you have to pay respect to so as not to be torn apart by rabid internet denizens. As good as it is. It's also a game where you're just trying to walk to a save point and get ambushed by six red slimes and your party one shot at full health before getting a chance to act.

I recently played SMT3 again on Switch and I didn't notice the performance being that bad. Like it felt like a PS2 game, but whatev.

Smt 3 is also a good game, and id definitely recommend it. Id say nocturne is probably a better put together game overall, but lately im finding 5 to be more FUN in moment to moment gameplay

Ok maybe not that bad, but still performance issues for a ps2 game should not be a thing on the switch lol at least by my standards
It's wild how all over this place this series is with difficulty. Only one I've played is Persona 5 which was kind of insultingly easy on hard mode. Except for Okumura.

Persona is intended for an audience that doesn't want to worry about sweating through the dungeons while they're on their ramen dates.

Once you get how SMT works none of them are hard except at the beginning when you got no tools

Mainline SMT is usually pretty difficult until you figure out how the games systems work. For smt3, this means absolutely abusing buffs

say what you will about just picking and choosing in 5, but the alignment system in 4 was psychotic. You have to consistently earn points for one side more than the other but just somewhat, and then try to choose the side you had less points in to commit to, in order to get neutral (the unambiguous true ending).

4 is the real one I want a Switch release for. I have a japanese imported new 3ds xl but everything is better on an OLED switch.

The fact that you can easily be TOO neutral to get the neutral ending 4 is crazy haha.

Game is awesome. It runs like ASS on the switch though. I'd buy it again on a better platform.

what makes it so bad to you? I can understand not liking the story but the actual gameplay is great.

I guess i can see why people who loved previous titles may not like it as much, as its definitely a departure in a lot of ways.

Which isn't saying much but yes I agree SMT V is low.
I'm just chilling
Some of the best exploration and combat from the series. Atrocious story and to be honest, voice acting was a big mistake for this series. Makes incredibly tense scenes feel like a Saturday morning cartoon.

I think some of the voice actors did pretty good tbh. I like Aogamis YOUNG MAN lol.

Did you play the smt3 remaster? How do you feel about the voice acting there
Still wish 5 wasn't a switch exclusive. Really lame route to go for that.

I am not playing SMT for story and character development but it sounds like the fifth iteration is worse than Soul Hackers 2 in that regard. A game I generally like quite a bit.

I would deffo give V a go but I never got around to a Switch so ehhh.

Lmao that's not happening my man. It was a switch exclusive & it's been two years, the only way you're getting a steam port is with emulation onto your PC

I would say 5 is head and shoulders a better game than soul hackers 2. Soul hackers characters are basically all that it had going for it

Persona 5 Royal released in 2020 (2019 for Japan) for PS4. It released in 2022 for Steam. But sure, it's not happening. Never mind that Atlus has also been releasing a lot of their games on Steam lately.

Persona 5 is the cash cow, it got a steam release because it's had 4 spinoffs by now. IDK why you'd compare the mainline series to the much more niche SMT, your logic is already flawed that far in. Couple that with the near decade it was from SMT IV>V, SMT IV never got a switch release or put on steam, so if you're basing this trend off of persona you're gonna be waiting the rest of your life.

Also the Etrian Odyssey titles were worse on steam than they were on the 3DS, & same with P3. Atlus isn't going to put effort into a proper port of SMT V if they barely make the effort to not fuck up the persona 3 remaster, gamers have no collective memory for these companies apparently. It's why I stopped playing Atlus games because they started phoning it in years ago

YES I will say Aogami's voice is by far the best. SMT 3's voice acting was ok but largely unnecessary, but it's hard to mess with the ambiance of smt 3.

I know most dungeons are subways but there was something to that and figuring out gimmicks plus boss fights keep you alert.

Plus ancillary stuff like side quests and the music (yeah the soul matrix music is lame). I was just playing the soundtrack off YouTube a few times at work on my phone and some songs I didn't even remember and I was just all damn this song hits all the right marks.

The gunsmith song is one of my modern all time favorites.

I will say that 5 has some of my favorite music in the series. Some of the boss themes are just insanely good. If you ever get a switch id definitely recommend you give 5 a try

boss fights in smt are always usually pretty intense too

The music from V what I heard seems good but I have no real context for it. I spoiled myself on mostly everything for V because I thought I'd never play it.

I thought I spoiled myself on Soul Hackers 2 a lot but most of the complaints are either fixed by now or pedantic. Yeah there are issues but early complaints were on 60 dollars with day one DLC or they didn't realize the camera could be adjusted.

The story in Soul Hackers 2 is mostly whatever, but the characters and interactions drive the game forward in a meaningful way.

Tbh the combat was ... fine. My main gripe was that when you're in a dungeon the NPCs just blurt out the answer to any puzzle or mystery as soon as you see it. They could really cut out a good 30% of all dialogue in that game and be fine. Especially when you're into Royal and have like 10 people in the party all quipping in with one liners just so they have something to say.

Persona 5s combat is actually good considering the fact that the combat isnt really the defining feature of the game
Soul Hackers 2 needed a navi mascot for some reason? I learned to ignore that. But constant vocal mascots are the worse. I thought we all learned that long by now......

I fucking love Soul Hackers 2 but it will channel it's best confusing world salad for no reason. Here's thestawplookenemybewastop.Bewstop.

I could do that better when drunk and the navi sucks. But I still give SH2 some dap. Sorry I couldn't play V.

Step 1: Hit the monster. Step 2: Don't get hit.
^ That one girl had nice glasses why was she never ever anything. Also That funny guy just turns his hat arround and was very religious. It doesn't work that way!!! He was so dopey and suddenly devout

Soul Hackers 2 is cheap usually or uhh try SMT PSX 1 fan translation, I coulda tried that more.

Hat guy being an aspirational loser looking up to his angel was a great idea, the problem was them wanting him to actually voice a coherent ideology instead of just doing what she tells him which Law is anyway
