I just got to the first combat encounter in Starfield. I'm sure it gets better but that was the worst combat in a Bethesda game I've ever played. Also I had to go through 3 different menus to pick up a gun and equip it right before the encounter. Weird design choice.
yep i was stuck with the laser took a while to figure out how to change

You'd think they would put recently acquired weapons on the d-pad quick menu. I don't even know how to add anything to that menu yet if I even can.

You can favourite it like every other Bethesda game, to then access from the d pad.

No this topic has nothing to do with dark souls. It has to do with Bethesda having bad combat.

I mean, you don't play Skyrim for its combat system. The game is about exploring and building a character. The fun is going from struggling against any random bandit to becoming strong enough to wreck a bandit marauder in full heavy armor.
But having good combat would only make this character adventure better, would it not? Saying that people dont play a game with tons of combat for the combat doesnt excuse said combat being really bad.

You can play Chivalry. That game is the polar opposite of depth but the combat works lol

I have never been able to get into Bethesda games because despite incredible worlds and exploration, the combat is just so bad. Skyrim melee combat is literally minecraft level of trading hits until one of you dies, and a lot of people consider it one of the greatest games of all time.

if combat wasnt super common, id understand giving some leeway, but you fight stuff in these games a lot. So why do these continually get a pass for combat that just isnt fun?
The easy answer is its the same engine as the one from morrowind. The have made improvments but the bones are the same.

People really come out of the woodwork when a Bethesda game comes out to say they never liked them, and they are actually bad games.

No one knows. I guarantee you combat sucks because a person wielding a gun is stupid.

If you're playing with a controller you can press the bumpers to change which pick node you're using. I don't remember the game telling me this and it took a second for me to figure that out. Wasted like 6 of those picks.

Does coming out of the woodwork to criticize these games take away from what I and other people in this topic are saying? What is that adding to the topic other than pretending that people who dont love Bethesda are either trolls or trying to get clout lmao

big deny i loved fallout 4 battle system
The combat isnt great but its good enough. Im trying to get good at the jet pack but it doesnt mesh with a melee build that well

and some of the posts are crazy, You guys really didnt think to pause the menu to equip the gun? My mistake is that I grabbed the gun and ran to go shoot the pirates but realized I forgot to grab the ammo too lol. My fault
You can have results or excuses.
Not both.
I'm with you TC. At least with the Fallout games, shooting is a lot harder to screw up, but Elder Scrolls combat (at least in Oblivion & Skyrim) is incredibly terrible. In both games, I explored the worlds, did a few side quests & then gave up because they were both boring as fuck due to horrendously boring combat.

bethesda has successfully outsourced making a complete game to the public.

That just depends what you're after. The combat can be enjoyable despite being simple. I mean, I find waltzing into a bandit camp and annihilating every one with magic pretty fun. I just wouldn't call it a "good" combat system.
Bosses are immune to the eat command so it won't be possible to end the final boss fight of the game by eating it.

Because no one plays Beth games for combat.
Is it a big part of their games?
Sure.
Salad or baked potato that comes with a steak is a big part of a meal, too.
No one's going to say the meal was terrible if steak was great.

No!!! It has to be pixel-perfect attacks and precision iframe dodging, or you may as well be reading a book! Git Gud!

If the salad or potato tasted really bad id probably remember the great steak alongside the terrible salad i had with it
Eh, its fine enough for games that are mostly about immersion and exploring.

Also, i think Fallout 4's combat was really great despite the story being dogshit. Starfields isnt too bad since its mostly just Fallout 4's. Once they fix the AI it'll get better

to the ppl defending bethesda in this topic WHY is it ok for them to release buggy unfinished games

Probably because most people still find them fun despite that. I like plenty of technically "bad" games that are fun to play.

I thought Bethseda owned Id (or had a similar business arrangements)?

Surely they have access to people with experience in enemy AI / behavior.

Hey, you all seriously want precise combat? Morrowind had hard click and soft click actually. I'll show up and say when I come home from my shitty job (still, fuck, well it is better.....butttttttt)

I don't want to come home sometimes and do parries constantly so I can do damage. Yea Elder Scrolls combat always sucked but w/e there mods and Charlie Brown could be a master archer eventually. I basically wanted to say perfect parries are annoying and Diablo 1 gameplay can be fun ( and what an atmosphere).

i put 20 pointless hours into the game before realizing it was just an overbloated Outer Worlds without any personality or anything to actually do that resembled an RPG experience, then uninstalled it

i could forgive the barebones combat if there were any other strong points, but no, this game symbolizes "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle" more than any bethesda game that's come before it
The stone that fell is still falling,
so let that stone be a wondrous thing
Are we talking about Starfield or Oblibivion?

i'm talking about starfield. i can never go back and play the older elder scrolls either though

Oblivion was annoying too but there was stealth and with PC mods deadly stealth. I am sticking up for Elder Scrolls combat in a way.. And Starfield is w/e it seems fine. I actually got very angry playing Pirarha Bytes combat. Risen and Gothic a lot of that is really cool, but it's is like are you are kidding me. I got that wrong.

And when I do get another better wpn I just wasn't patient enough lawl

The melee combat sucks but the shooting is solid enough.

Not really sure what the better comparison is supposed to be. Either the game is super polished but restricted or super free and systemic but janky. Can't really have both.

PS4 looks great
I was definitely fading but I was trying to make a point of if I didn't already is that Elder Scrolls never had good base combat but a lot of times I didn't need some elaborate system with parries and such to make me more pissed off when I was just trying to unwind and lose myself.

Sometimes I do just want to just click with minimal effort.

Same, I mostly just like to whack and bash (with the occasional fwip) in Elderscrolls , and pew pew pew (with the occasional whack and bash) in Fallout.

I get both in Starfield and some fun space exploration, so I'm enjoying the game a lot.

btw: I just finished a side mission where I was being hunted through a wrecked colony by a creature that looks like it could tear a deathclaw in half while trying to activate defensive turrets to kill it. It was legitimately tense and stressful and I loved it.

I think the Missions in Star Field are some of the best since Oblivion (not counting NV). Doing the pirate missions was a fucking blast.
