I have never been able to get into Bethesda games because despite incredible worlds and exploration, the combat is just so bad. Skyrim melee combat is literally minecraft level of trading hits until one of you dies, and a lot of people consider it one of the greatest games of all time.

if combat wasnt super common, id understand giving some leeway, but you fight stuff in these games a lot. So why do these continually get a pass for combat that just isnt fun?
bethesda has successfully outsourced making a complete game to the public.

There's no reasoning with Bethesda fanboys, so might aswell let it go.

Starfield in it's current state is a solid game, I'd say between 6.5 and 7.5 depending on your preferences, but considering the budget at their disposal and the hype they created, it's nowhere close to those ridiculous 10/10 reviews.

Maybe it's just me, but what's so amazing about the game? For me, a 10/10 game either has to be perfect in every way if we talk all the stuff we've seen already or it has to be innovative. Starfield is neither.

I can't name one gameplay mechanic we haven't seen before.

People really come out of the woodwork when a Bethesda game comes out to say they never liked them, and they are actually bad games.

The way certain folks would have you believe Bethesda is a critically panned and unsuccessful studio that releases unplayable buggy flops every several years

Swordplay isn't exactly Witcher 3's strong suit either and that's perhaps one of the top 5 RPGs ever made.
It's always been about exploration, role-playing, and simply being part of a great narrative.

It's a problem a lot of open world games with a ton of content have. Even all-time great ones like Skyrim or Witcher.

Witcher 3 is an all-time classic, but combat is by far the weakest aspect of the game.

For example, I've never been a GTA fan, so I didn't play RDR, either. Last year I finally gave RDR2 a shot. Amazing game in every aspect, really enjoyable...but the actual gameplay (gunplay) is straight from 2005. Just not something I could ever see myself playing for more than one playthrough.

CDPR (rightfully so) go destroyed at Cyberpunk release, but if you look at Starfield, their NPC AI is even worse. They don't even react to stuff like guns being pulled out or shot in cities, even shooting story-related NPCs doesn't do shit. It's 2023, ffs.

Im not huge on Witcher 3 either tbh. Im usually a gameplay over story type of person, and in games where im mostly in it for story, I find i usually like turn based better.

I dont think anyone in this topic has gotten anywhere near trying to get clout for not thinking bethesda is 10/10. Its possible to not like a game just because you dont like it

Given how some of the other boards (like the Pokemon one) have trolls who pretend to be fans but say nothing but negatives, you'd have to be understanding if someone has doubt about that.

The same way that Pokemon still has vehement defenders of it's IP is all that needs to be said. Bethesda has been doing open world Bethesda games with little to minimum changes between them for 20 years now, same with Pokemon. Except this time it's in space, while still retaining that classic Bethesda jank & a deja vu where you feel like you've done this before.

I dont know. Ive liked every Bethesda game less and less since Morrowind (which was an actual good RPG).

Its understandable why PC gamers are more tolerant of Bethesdas shortcomings, as we just mod the hell out of the game anyway. I dont know why console players suddenly have no standards whatsoever when discussing Bethesda titles.

I'm dumbfounded there as well. Even not long after it came out the game looked like utter crap to me so i never played it and brought Dragons Dogma instead.

A better question is why people complain about combat and buginess in Bethesda games, but praise Obsidian, who are WAY worse than Bethesda for bugs and jank.

The games are extremely critically and commercially successful yet the combat has not gotten better, or even changed that much throughout the years. Yes, outside of dying message boards the combat clearly gets a pass.

You can't just go ham, you have to wait until the enemy lets you attack it.
they like the rest of the experience enough to deal with however good or bad the combat mechanics are.

bethesda mechanics don't bother me as much in their shooty games as much as they do in their sword and magic games.

And given a pass for making a new next Gen game run 30 fps only instead of 60
is this another dark souls topic
might as well complain that bethesda makes terrible bullethell games too

I just got to the first combat encounter in Starfield. I'm sure it gets better but that was the worst combat in a Bethesda game I've ever played. Also I had to go through 3 different menus to pick up a gun and equip it right before the encounter. Weird design choice.

I mean, you don't play Skyrim for its combat system. The game is about exploring and building a character. The fun is going from struggling against any random bandit to becoming strong enough to wreck a bandit marauder in full heavy armor.
Bosses are immune to the eat command so it won't be possible to end the final boss fight of the game by eating it.
