Consumers only have themselves to blame for these price hikes. It began with console gamers being willing to pay for basic functionality like cloud saves and online multiplayer. Now youve shown them that youre willing to accept a business model where you rent forever and never own anything. Once they get you addicted to the subscription teat, they can charge what they like and the vast majority of you will knuckle under and pay it.
Just like every other subscription service, these are not sustainable, and are terrible for artists. Spotify pays artists jack shit compared to album sales. Part of the writers / actors strikes is that video streaming services arent paying artists jack shit compared to movie / TV Blu-Ray / DVD sales.
Im less concerned about the impact of this on AAA developers, other than other companies joining thus bandwagon that arent as consumer friendly as Microsoft currently is. For example, Epic Games starting a GamePass competitor tied to their shitty store would be terrible for consumers.
For indie developers, as long as theyre allowed to sell on other stores, accepting a wad of cash to be on GamePass is a no brainer to get word of mouth out for their game, but if we ever get to a point where Microsoft says to be on GamePass you cant sell your game anywhere, or if services like GamePass become the norm and buying games isnt really a thing anymore, thats when youll start seeing indie games riddled with micro transactions, because a lump sum up front wont keep the lights on forever, and then need to make money somehow.
People need to think about long term repercussions. As an adult with a full time job and other responsibilities especially for people with kids how many games a year can you really play when most games are 100 hour experiences? If people focus on the games they can actually play especially during Steam sales etc most people are going to spend around or slightly more than a year of GamePass in a given year, while supporting developers far more.
