I pay for the cheapest tier and never play online. Although I might let my subscription lapse because I still have a big backlog of free Ps plus games I havent played yet, so whats the point in acquiring more?

Oh shit, I cant play my old PS Plus games without an active subscription. Oh shit, that includes Bloodborne!

This sort of thing is just funny to me. I haven't had PS+ since 2015, I bought two years' worth in 2013 for 50% off. I got a PS4 in 2017, and never felt like getting PS+ would be a good idea.

I really don't get it. If you want to play games online, you should get a PC. If even just for how much money you'll save over several years of not having to pay Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft to use your own internet connection.
sony can blow me
Looks like this gamer's paradise has turned into a gamer's hell...............................................
Consumers only have themselves to blame for these price hikes. It began with console gamers being willing to pay for basic functionality like cloud saves and online multiplayer. Now youve shown them that youre willing to accept a business model where you rent forever and never own anything. Once they get you addicted to the subscription teat, they can charge what they like and the vast majority of you will knuckle under and pay it.

Just like every other subscription service, these are not sustainable, and are terrible for artists. Spotify pays artists jack shit compared to album sales. Part of the writers / actors strikes is that video streaming services arent paying artists jack shit compared to movie / TV Blu-Ray / DVD sales.

Im less concerned about the impact of this on AAA developers, other than other companies joining thus bandwagon that arent as consumer friendly as Microsoft currently is. For example, Epic Games starting a GamePass competitor tied to their shitty store would be terrible for consumers.

For indie developers, as long as theyre allowed to sell on other stores, accepting a wad of cash to be on GamePass is a no brainer to get word of mouth out for their game, but if we ever get to a point where Microsoft says to be on GamePass you cant sell your game anywhere, or if services like GamePass become the norm and buying games isnt really a thing anymore, thats when youll start seeing indie games riddled with micro transactions, because a lump sum up front wont keep the lights on forever, and then need to make money somehow.

People need to think about long term repercussions. As an adult with a full time job and other responsibilities especially for people with kids how many games a year can you really play when most games are 100 hour experiences? If people focus on the games they can actually play especially during Steam sales etc most people are going to spend around or slightly more than a year of GamePass in a given year, while supporting developers far more.

I just always get the highest level subscription for all my consoles and dont make that much use of it. It seems such a low amount of money to bitch about.

And yes, I understand that its all relative to how much you have, but if the price of these subscriptions really hurts that much, then maybe you should invest more time in career progression.
I'm just wondering if I bought a bunch of ps plus subscriptions codes off sites like cdkeys, does that mean I'll be able to use them in the next few years or will they inactivate them? Because with this price hike they're basically a steal, I'd save $50 off each one.

Its not about how much it costs. Its about the precedent it sets and the business model it encourages.

Yes this is just a price increase for the sake of a price increase. There's literally been no substantial changes to the service since they first introduced the new tiers only last year .

Paying minimal fees for ongoing access to entertainment? Oh no.
I tried to look up the pricing history of PS Plus accounts and failed. Does anybody know if there have been previous price increases since it launched in 2010?

Very recently, they silently removed Stray which was their first Day 1 exclusive albeit not a AAA title. Never even had a chance to finish that :(
What do you mean never had a chance to finish that? It was on there for a year.
Sony must see the writing on the wall already for their "portable"

Yes, in 2019.
Isn't Game Pass Ultimate still like $40 more a year?

But it's still bullshit. Plus Premium isn't even worth it because you have to stream the PS3 games. Fucking Cell still causing headaches.

Developers get less money from those minimal fees. Weve seen it in music, movies and TV, now gaming. Its like people are incapable of long term thinking and predicting what trends will cause.

Hard to find the info, Google just wants to give me results about the new price hike. Anyway, it turns out it was actually in 2017.

There have been price increases since then in certain regions though, in 2019 and maybe also 2018.

If you pay full price for it it's $45 for a 3-month sub, which is $180 per year.

So at that point it's only $20/year more than Premium while actually giving substantially more value.
