Again, there's a certain cognitive dissonance at work in that. For decades, pro-Zionist right-wingers triple sugar-coated the myth of the state of Israel as a benevolent liberal democracy, and
any
criticism levelled against Israeli government policy for its impact on Palestinians would have them sputtering furious denials to protect a glowing reputation that Israel simply did not deserve. There was a resolute, long-standing refusal to recognize
any
aspects of apartheid in Israeli government policy, or to recognize that
any
of its victims were unarmed, innocent civilians, or if they were that there was
any
element of intentionality.
They didn't so much approve of a gradual genocide as vehemently deny (probably even to themselves) that anything of the kind could be conceived of as taking place.
