i was new to rpgs as a young teen when i first rented so2 from blockbuster. was spending the night with a friend and we stayed up all night and played it. battle system is obv tops for its day and it still holds up today. item creation is incredibly deep and rewarding and the private action system gives you so many variations of outcomes. being able to recruit different characters and the two starting characters give the game infinite replay ability and the post game dungeon is still one of the most brutally hard and satisfying to this day.

i still replay it every few years and it has a special place in my heart. it is a flawed game but it has a good story and fun gameplay that more than make up for it. it capitalized on the era of longer and longer rpgs and the plot twists were refreshing to teenage me and i feel like they hold up pretty well. the main character was kinda bland and generic but there are plenty of good supporting characters and there are some legit great moments in the game.

it was really unique in both the story presentation and the gameplay (dungeon crawling). the overall story kinda has come recycled rpg tropes today but at the time it felt novel to me. i am more of a traditional rpg guy most of the time but the battles were still fun and the dungeon crawling was enjoyable, especially progressing through the story as you went along.

monster rancher 2 is my favorite of the series and the nostalgia is through the roof of putting all my cd's and ps1 games in the console to scan for monsters. that feeling when you got a rare monster or one that couldn't be accessed yet was so good. the raising of monsters and combining them was so cool and using the old monsters to boost new ones was a vital part of the strategy of getting past s rank. at the time and to this day it holds up imo and is a great and highly unique series. i wish there was something like it today

another one of my favorite ps1 games and another one i rented from blockbuster to experience for the first time. the beginning of the game had some cutesy elements that have me slight earthbound vibes (which is great imo) and it didn't take long to realize it had a really great story that just continued to get better and better the entire way. the characters are all really fleshed out and well developed and the battle system is simple but with enough quirks to be really fun and there were some really challenging fights. every aspect of grandia was excellent and it had some legitimate emotional sequences. i love grandia 2 but the original is the best in the series

wild arms games have a special place in my heart and wild arms 2 is the best ps1 entry imo. everything that was cool and unique about the first game was improved upon in the second iteration. the western feel, the puzzles, the discovery of new areas, the characters and dialogue, all improved upon from an already cool and unique formula. progression was never boring and the story, while kinda cliche, kept me interested the entire way. the series in general is underrated and i own physical copies of them all but 2 is a psx classic

one of my favorite games on ps1 and still one of my favorite games ever. lunar sssc is peak working designs magic which may seem dated to people today but the humor is peak 90s wd awesomeness and it adds to the already great story and adventure. i have so many amazing memories of this game. the villain reveal in the dragon cave blew me away at the time and i think the villains remains one of the absolute coolest in videogames. this is another title i play through every few years and it will always be at the top of my chart

suikoden is the first game in one of my favorite series. while it is obv the most dated it still has all the mechanics and unique elements that make the series one of the very best. the 108 stars of destiny was such a novel concept and being able to recruit 108 characters was so cool. the different battle formats was very cool and the story was still fun even if it didn't find its legendary level until 2. i owned (and still own) a copy of the og suikoden and will replay the series every few years.

another one that counts as one of my favorite games of all time and on ps1. weirdly i have never owned a physical copy of suikoden 2. i borrowed a copy from a friend to play through in the ps1 days but even by that point it was expensive af. the story in suikoden 2 is arguably the best story for a ps1 game and on the shortlist of best jrpg story's imo. it did everything that suikoden did well and improved on it. one of the most iconic and devilish villains of all time and plenty of optional and secret content. so many characters but still had many that were well developed. it was an instant classic and remains one of the very best rpgs

Dragon Warrior VII. I know it was a long arduous game, but at the time I was like this is the best Dragon Warrior/Quest ever. Took literally two-three hours for your first battle haha which is silly tbf. I believe at the time the creators were inspired by that Myst game. I'll tell you what,
"A lesser talent couldn't have pulled it off. But I'm willing to bet on BoJack Horseman. Are you?"
