He was just a doormat for his entire life, right? In high school he followed Hank around, and that made him into an all-state football player. Then after that, he followed around his wife doing whatever she told him to. She was kind of a terrible person, and it did not go well for him.

I don't know about that. He was very popular and friendly. He wasn't too much of a doormat. I think the fact was, Lenore was a terrible woman who manipulated and slowly destroyed him. It was his marriage that made him into what he became.

She was controlling and evil and he loved her. When she left, he became a whimpering child-like man with so much mental issues that he craved affection and had such a poor image of himself. In the episode where they were firefighters, his own flashback when telling the story showed how he truly saw himself. He saw himself as fatter and balder than he actually was and even a total slob. IN comparison, Dale is his complete opposite.
