a few things:

  1. i need to give my landlord a 30 day notice (haven't done this yet)
  2. my lease is up in april (would have to put in my 30 day notice by march 1)
  3. i started looking now, but every place is requiring my lease to start february 1st.
  4. if i start looking in march, i would have to put my 30 day notice in, meaning im risking not having a place to live (if i dont find anything by april 1)

my question, how would i have an apartment lined up before putting a 30 day notice in? how do normal people do this? lmao

An expensive option is starting the second lease a bit early. This removes a LOT of moving pressure as you can gradually transition without close together strict deadlines.

You don't need to give 30 day notice.

I once read online that most serious accidents occur at home.

So I'm glad you've decided to move. :)
Dont let the new place dictate when you move. You tell them when you want to move in.

At my apartment if you didnt give notice the lease was automatically extended another year.

Ask for a month to month lease after the 1 year is up. Typically a 100 dollars or less premium every month but its better then risking temporary homelessness. Then give the 30 day notice once it actually got a spot lined up.

But then the landlord is going to go with someone else. They're not going to move the date because of me.

At my apartment, I have to sign a new lease every year. Although sometimes it's not kept track of, one year I didn't sign the new lease until 8 months in.

This is a good idea. This brings up a good point though, is it okay to tell my landlord that I'm interested in moving out? Can I tell them I'm looking for something different, but I might end up staying? If you want to quit a job, you don't tell your employer you're quitting until you have a job lined up. Is it the same for apartments? I feel like it's not

You can either break the lease (bad idea), or start looking in late February.

I usually see places on apartments.com that are a few months out to start your lease. Just look thru the listings carefully.

this. as long as it's accepted you can give advance notice. in rare circumstances shit can fuck up.

had to do this with my old landlord. moved into the new place with 15 days left on the lease at my old place but it took time to get everything out of there and clean it up (not easy at all). hopefully the last time i move (unless my roommate or me passes away).

depends. I did it with my apartment when I bought a place a few years ago, it was a little more than usual but they were fine with it.

Ive heard others say its common and most places dont mind but the worst they can do is say no and then youre in the same place you are now. Worth a try I feel like.

The eviction process is a huge pain in the ass from a landlords perspective as is having an empty apartment collecting no money. Because of that, most will work something out with you as long as you talk to them. Their ideal situation is to have someone move out, they clean/fix it in a weekend and they rent it to a new tenant. It's a win-win to line everything up

i think a lot of people just risk it and hope that if shit doesn't happen they can stay with a friend or family member for a few days/weeks

my landlord contacted me yesterday morning asking me if i plan on renewing my lease. i haven't responded to her yet, but this is what i'm talking about, she requests way too much of a notice. not sure what to say to her. i guess i'll say "i'm thinking about moving, but i might stay if i don't find anything".
