In regards to what he did at the end of the first game

I understand why he did it and sympathize with him but *TLoU2 spoils*

He was a 70s-esque antihero making completely unethical decisions in a world with no rules so I was perfectly satisfied with his development from beginning to end.

Now on the other hand, KILLING HIM OFF the way it was written...that wasn't cool.

Not really. The fireflies never actually came off as competent enough to produce a cure much less distribute it plus putting the onus of saving the world on a 14 year old girl is extremely shitty.

Nope, he did everything right in the first game.
Then they made him a moron in the second game (very briefly, lol).

What the hell does "should of" mean?
Never played 2 and have no idea what even happens in it

I was fine with Joel's actions at the end of 1

I dont understand people who criticize him. I would consider anyone who didn't do the same thing as him, as evil

I can understand disagreeing with them, but whats not to understand? Anti-Joel people usually argue that he doomed the one true shot at possibly restoring humanity. Its not like they just wanted to watch a little girl die.

There was no chance the fireflies would ever save the world. They don't have a way to distribute it everywhere

Also, it's not up to a child to give e up her life to provide the cure. Maybe the world doesn't need to be saved. I would never let a little girl be killed like some medical sacrifice. Fuck the world. I would only care about ellie

I think it is more than that. She was obviously dealing with survivor's guilt, so even if they told her she would die, I think she would have said yes because she felt like she deserved it.

I do agree with Joel's decision at the end of the first game. Don't get why people think he is some moral upstanding citizen though. Didn't Tommy cut ties with him become he was becoming too extreme? I recall when they were in the car after leaving Bill's, Joel was able to recognize a trap incoming, telling Ellie something like "Trust me, I know", implying he used to do the same thing.

They both did a lot of bad stuff in the past, but then turned their lives around. Karma still caught up.

It's this mostly. Joel did what he did, right or wrong. But his choice had consequences. The end he got was the end he deserved.

Basically, the fireflies were going to cut out Ellie's brain. Joel said fuck that and went on a rampage through the hospital to rescue her. He then lied about what happened when she woke up later.

Yeah even Abby's dad sounds like a fucking moron in the flash backs of the second game.

Also iirc Joel never tortured any fireflies for fun(in fact I'm not sure if he ever took it slow on anyone on purpose, correct me if I am wrong). Abby woulda been justified putting a bullet in his head, but nobody deserves to be tortured. Torture is a tool that can get information out of people or some sort of leverage. Using it for sadism, revenge, nah.

When Ellie took it slow on the girl in the hospital it was because she was holding out information. I'm not excusing Ellie for murdering hundreds of people for revenge either. I don't think anyone here is a "good person", but fuck Abby tbh.

Understand why he did it - Hell, would have probably done the same.

1 and 2 spoilers

They established even before 2 that ellie knew he lied to her face. Joel might have came off selfish, but it's not the first time a parental figure had to comfort their kid with a lie to protect them - in this case someone who was talking like a martyr "still waiting for my turn." Ellie was blinded by some naive ideals in a world that has gone to shit, and was about to throw her life away for some incompetent pricks.

That said, joel earned that brutal death years ago, but it's character assassination how they did it, and made him an easy mark to do it.

They easily could have made it amazing, and do the story some good had abby infiltrated jackson under the guise of being a wanderer, get to know the village, it's hierarchy, and ellie for a few weeks, gets introduced by joel through ellie (begrudgingly as she is not on speaking terms), then she can kick off her revenge plot on an unsuspecting joel. You can still keep abby's motive a mystery here, and drive this half off ellie's revenge off the fact she never got to rebuild with him. Also, the added benefit of establishing tension with abby's group for an unauthorized mission.

she wasn't lied to by the Fireflies; Marlene didn't know Ellie had to die for the cure until she joined with the rest later on.

this wasn't character assassination - Joel trusts complete strangers in the first game, but the only difference is they don't end up turning on him.

I understand why the Fireflies wanted to do what they did. They felt like they had no choice.

I understand why Joel did what he did. He did not think what was happening was fair and would do anything to stop it.

I understand why Joel lied. He did not want Ellie to see him differently and wanted her to keep her hope.

I understand why Abby did what she did. She lost almost everything thanks to Joel and felt like she needed 'justice'.

I understand why Ellie did what she did. She lost the most important person to her and felt like she needed 'justice'.

All of them are justified from their own perspectives. But life doesn't revolve around a single perspective. All of those characters would do similar if not the same thing if they were placed in the others shoes.

My perspective on Joel never changed really. He wouldn't have done things any differently even if he knew the outcome.
A Fallen Mascot
Joel very reluctantly trusted Sam and Henry though.

To answer the OP, no. If anything, Part II just reaffirmed my belief that he did the right thing. Jerry was a scumbag. He wanted to cut out Ellie's brain after a few hours of poking and prodding but didn't want to inform Joel or Ellie. Why? Because he didn't want to give either of them a chance to say no. And we're supposed to feel bad for this asshat because he had a daughter and rescues Zebra's? Fuck Jerry. And as for the rest of the Fireflies... they did take Joel and Tess guns and, at least by the end, had no intentions of giving them back.

I think people focus too much on the veracity of the science that's presented in the games, when it's clear ND just wanted to give a different take on zombies, in a way that sounded interesting.

I say that to say, I don't think they did much research on the cordycepts, and that while there's no reason to believe this stuff would work irl, it's presented as fact in the game's world.

so Joel, Ellie, the Fireflies, etc. believe it would work, and that's why there's a moral dilemma around Joel's actions. otherwise, he was saving Ellie from a bunch of quacks, and no one would have issue with that, except the other quacks.

Good post!

And a very good summary/explanation, why Druckmanns writing was top-notch. He really nailed it with both games. The plot is plausible and well-structured, the narrative thrilling, and the characters realistically portrayed. He didn't sugarcoat his story to appeal to fanboys. Instead, he made it a grim journey, that can be enjoyed very much by people with emotional maturity.
