You arent supposed to laugh

It looks great imo. Better than I expected. A modern DnD movie needs to be fun and light imo.

whats worse, unintentionally laughing and having fun watching an awful movie thats for the most part, not trying to be funny. Or not even cracking a smile at something trying to be funny/actively getting annoyed?

I think Vox Machina has a balance of fun and dark, and I totally think that a Forgotten Realms movie or Dragonlance movie could have a balance too. There is plenty of humor in those books (especially the early ones).

I just think it's a mistake to ignore so many iconic characters, especially when they really need to make a good impression to wipe away the stink of the previous 3 D&D movies. Do something that YOU KNOW will be a hit, then you can branch off and do lighter side stories with brand new characters.

The MCU could be used as a guide. They didn't start off with Guardians of the Galaxy. They started off with more "serious" movies like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America etc. before introducing the wacky band of Guardians that will challenge the BBEG to a dance off to save the universe.

The latter. MST3K/RiffTrax taught me it is much better to laugh at a movie that's trying to be serious than not laugh at a movie that's trying to be funny.

Maybe because I don't know a damn thing about DnD, but it looks pretty good to me. I'll definitely giving it a go, but I can see soo many things go wrong with this movie.
