The World Series of Poker is a month of the most important poker tournaments usually held once a year in the summer in Vegas. After cancelling the live events last year they announced a fall series for 2021. From October to mid November thousands of poker player will be in Vegas taking their shots in huge tournament fields. Its essentially thousands of people in a giant conference room sitting close together and passing chips and cards to each other.
People had been arguing about how they were going to do it safely for months. Yesterday they announced that they would require proof of vaccination and, as expected, some people are flipping out.
I think its a good thing. I go every year and was looking forward to a fall series just so it isnt so hot. I was worried about the case numbers and wanted them to do something but didnt think it would actually happen.
Now the thinking is that some of the events will have smaller fields which is kind of a change but could be good for the stuff with guaranteed prize pools. Some people are also saying the events just got tougher because the anti vaccine people are generally worse players because they have poor critical thinking skills.
I had booked by travel a while ago and am not canceling. This makes me feel a bit better about going.
