Video goes in how the Ancient Romans marked outsiders based off their cultural practices rather than physical appearance like we do today. The Ancient Greeks had a similar outlook in which the language you spoke and the customs you practice singled you out as a "barbarian" to them. Customs like carrying weapons in public, the type of wine you drank, the type of communities you lived at were some of those markers. The people of Aetolia, for example, spoke Greek but also lived in rural communities and carried weapons in public spaces that made them in the eyes of the southern greek city-states a "semi-barbarian" state.
