They're just shitty RPGs that are generally worthwhile when they're on sale.
Marenian Tavern Story is somehow actually pretty good.
Currently playing Arkham Knight. Really enjoying it tbh. I know a lot of people thought it was too much Batmobile, but having just finished Asylum and City replays it's a nice change of pace. Plus I already know beforehand this is "the Batmobile one." I am enjoying it.

As for genre, idk these days. In a visceral sense, I probably enjoy single player FPS games the most. But I play a large variety of genres and my tastes lean different ways at times.

Games to give a shot:
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemonn
Mario Rabbids

I'm trying to, but the combat in MC is very *artificial* hard (it tests your perseverance, not your decision-making or performance skills).

What genre do you like the best?
Action [RPGs], stealth-style and open world.

What game(s) do you recommend everyone give a shot?

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

I've been doing a second playthrough of Xenoblade X lately, but I'm also juggling THPS4, THUG, Resident Evil 4 No Merchant Pro, and Resident Evil 0. Xenbolade X is just as amazing as the first time on the second run.

My favorite genres are RPG, stealth, and non-cover action games.

Speaking of which, play Resident Evil 6 (or 4 if you haven't done that) and Chrono Cross. 2 phenomonal games that are tragically misunderstood by most of the people who played them.

Currently playing Mad Max. It's super solid. It's got a lot of Ubisoft style map clearing but the actual gameplay is a lot of fun and smashing into shit in your car never gets old. I would definitely recommend it.
I just started Shadow of the Colossus for the first time (the remaster on PS4) and it was a rough start. The controls were really giving me trouble and I just wasn't getting it, but by the time I got to the second colossus it started feeling better. I still have trouble with the horse and camera pretty often, as it sometimes feels like I shouldn't be touching the camera at all and how the horse will occasionally go on autopilot and steer on it's own, but other times it doesn't.

Playing The Force Unleashed 2 --- it's not very good.

My main genre are JRPGs, but I play a lot of genres....

I'd recommend CrossCode to anyone who grew up with Lufia & Secret of Mana.

What are you playing atm?

The House in Fata Morgana is the main game that I am focused on. It's a visual novel. The story so far is that you are the Master of this ancient mansion but you do not recall your identity. Another character called The Maid who has faithfully served in this mansion for centuries shows you all the different periods to time where other people were Master of the mansion. She shows you the tragic story the befall these people in hopes of restoring your memory.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is a game I'm playing occasionally for the first time. It's my first Zelda game in this style.

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is another side game. I've already played the original Wii version back in 2018 so I'm in no rush to finish this. Since there's not much coming out for the Switch I'm interested in any time soon, I'll try to make this game last for a while.

Are you enjoying it?

Yes, I am enjoying all three games so far. I actually didn't care for A Link Between Worlds at first but once Link discovered Lorule, everything changed. The game became way more enjoyable for me.

What genre do you like the best?

RPGs are my favorite type of games.

What game(s) do you recommend everyone give a shot?

Bloodborne, F-Zero GX, Sonic Mania, Jak X Combat Racing, and Batman Arkham City.

In the event you've never, ever played it --- I recommend you check out "A Link To The Past". A Link Between Worlds seems so short (and easy :/) by comparison... I enjoyed my time with it, but it just reminded me that I'd played similar (and better) when I younger.

-----

Since I posted, I've switched to SteamWorld Quest: The Hand Of Gilgamech, and I'm easily more invested in that title than I was with Force Unleashed 2 XD

Kildread posted... LttP is also really good. Really, it'd be difficult to mess up with a top down Zelda. LttP, Link's Awakening/DX, Oracles, Minish Cap...all good games. I'm glad you switched to something better!

I might not agree with some game design choices, but I don't get (figuratively and literally) unofficial game mods.

[ However, I am *in favor* of movie cuts that best support or improve the story-telling, or action-pacing, of a film. ]

I tend to finish games I start, unless I'm really not having a good time in addition to not making progress. Force Unleashed 2 was pretty short, so I made constant progress.

Also, couldn't tell you what the cliffs in CrossCode remind you of XD

I know what the payoff is for playing/finishing a game as it "was released and intended." What is the payoff from playing/finishing a game as it "neither was released nor intended"?

What are you playing atm?

I guess I'm currently bouncing between a few different games at the moment. God of War 2018, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade.

Are you enjoying it?

Explorers of Sky is one of my favorite games just for the story, Path of Radiance is really fun to cheese with mounted units, Binding Blade is kinda fun once I really got into it (Rutger is OP, and Shanna is actually a good unit who got an unfairly bad rap for a while). And as for God of War, I actually expected to not like it at first because I've been burned by really hyped up games not really doing anything for me before, and I played Devil May Cry 5 before I got around to it so now I have unrealistically high expectations for action gameplay, but I've been getting really absorbed in GoW lately. I love the father-son dynamic between Kratos and Atreus, and especially how Kratos is an incorrigible stick in the mud with no sense of humor, and one of my favorite things to do in a video game now is counter attack enemies by Captain America shield punching them off of cliffs. Funniest shit every time.

What genre do you like the best?

Eh, don't really have a favorite genre as long as I'm having fun playing it. Some of my favorite games are visual novels even (Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors; Ace Attorney series; and I like the premise behind the Danganronpa series, but I haven't played those yet).

What game(s) do you recommend everyone give a shot?

Strongly recommend Guacamelee, it's a really fun Metroidvania with a colorful Mexican aesthetic; Mark of the Ninja, a 2D stealth game that expects you to actually be stealthy, while giving you a bunch of fun tools and maneuvers to do it with; and Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, a Strategy RPG with a continent spanning, epic story inspired by Norse and Celtic mythology, and a really memorable mid-game twist. I especially like how the maps you play on actually line up with the world map shown between chapters, and how legendary weapons (only wieldable by certain characters) are specifically balanced around making you feel like you're controlling an army of powerful and legendary heroes.

Allow me to rephrase my previous post (#33).

Any game is meant to be a challenge to play; the player's experience, but in that developer's game. So...
.

What is the point of playing a modded game if the mod(s) used prevents you from having the experience for which that game was designed?

Because mods can make a game better? Better graphics, fixed bugs, better balance, new abilities, new content, whole new ways of playing.

The point of games, in general, is fun, and mods can make a game more fun. I don't believe this works for all, or even many, games, but sandboxes are particularly suited to it.

Going through the Fate series right now. Loved stay night, hollow ataraxia is taking me longer because the random scenes burn me out quickly, still like it though

Gonna play through Trails of Cold Steel 1-3 soon and of course I'm going to fucking love it

I dont even like actually playing games much anymore so story heavy RPGs are my thing

Anyone who likes JRPGs needs to play the Trails series. It's like the only series I care about anymore
The Legend of Heroes series is the greatest RPG series of all time. Fight me.

Yes, go on...

Better graphics, fixed bugs, ...
Fair enough. These are things that the development team(s) involved should have resolved , but instead likely flagged to bypass QA and make deadlines.

... better balance, new abilities, new content, whole new ways of playing.
Now, these are different. They seem like franchise story fan-fiction: well-meant, occasionally good, but usually not.
.

My impression of unofficial mods++ for
- crafted games: breaks the base designs and sends the wrong message to players.
- shoddy games: papers-over the root problems** and sends the wrong message (or, worse, none) to developers.

++ Excluding mods for player controls, camera, or appearance. These always should be player-centric choices.
** FF XIV and its ARR re-launch by Square-Enix is a *tremendous* case-study from which every developer and player can learn and benefit.
