I'm thinking of getting a Kindle, but there are 3 kinds currently being sold (Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Oasis) and all have pretty big differences in pricing. Anyone have any of the 3 and can let me know how they feel about them, and if they're worth it?
hell naw, im a thug i dont read.
Intel i7 5820k-GeForceGTX780-32GB DDR4RAM-OCZ 240GB SSD-Windows10-1440p
I have one, but it's the earliest model, I think.

but there's the Amazon Kindle app you can use on your phone/tablet, and it's free.

that's how I've been reading.

Just get a tablet I have 3 all gifts from people. Nothing really special and are very limited to what they can fit and do
If you must get one, get the paperwhite, having a backlight makes such a big difference for night reading. I would say it's not waterproof but now it apparently is. There's not much reason to get the oasis unless you like the metal feeling and the warm light. That's not really worth it in my eyes.

Looks like the normal kindle does too. Up to you to decide if more resolute and being waterproof are worth what, 30 dollars more?

To people who say you can read on your phone, yes that's true, but having a nice dedicated bigger screen to just read on makes such a big difference in my eyes. Not to mention the lighting on the kindle is...gentler? I can read next to someone at night and they can tell I'm reading on my phone whereas with the kindle it's not as bothersome. Also you're not soaking up phone battery. The kindle battery is a beast, I can read a full book without having to bother recharging it, hitting about 20-40%. I'm talking about 1000 page books here. So that's a big plus. With backlight used, but the wireless turned off.

You can definitely get some cases that are great for the kindle too.

same. plus the kindle phone app even has dark mode which is perfect for reading at night before bed
I have the 2019 Paperwhite and it's awesome. Heads up, it's a lot smaller than it seems in pictures though.

The Oasis seems unnecessary imo.

I was thinking about getting a Kindle because of this exactly.

For the past week, I've been reading on the kindle App maybe four hours a day with five minute breaks every half hour and an appropriate brightness setting and I'm still experiencing bad eye strain. My vision is blurring and I'm having a hard time adjusting to even minor lighting changes.

The bigger screen helps for sure, and you can make the letters bigger much more easily compared to a smaller screen.

My paperwhite's screen size is the size of a standard paper back. It's about right.
I have one but I went back to books. I like my reading to be a detox from screen time
Kindle is eh

Kindle Paperwhite is best value for money

Kindle Oasis is the best on the market but not value for dollar

No other brands of e-reader are worth considering
Wife has a paperwhite and I just asked her if she needed and upgrade and she just said "Why?"

She uses it daily, and has had it for a couple years if that helps.

Paperwhites are great. And since the technology isnt really advancing theres not a lot of point to upgrade

Your wife has great taste, is she single?
no
Is the Paperwhite version worth it over the standard? I think I've decided that the Oasis is too expensive for what it offers, but can't choose between the other two.

Idk they both have a backlight and the same resolution so there isnt a difference in terms of usability.

You just have to decide if waterproofing and extra storage for audiobooks is worth $40 to you
no
Actually, the resolution is higher on the Paperwhite, the standard has 167 ppi vs the 300 ppi on the Paperwhite. I'm just not sure if that's a good enough difference or not (I'm not good at resolution numbers)

The backlight alone is worth it

wait, the baseline edition has a backlight now as well?
BTW when you buy it, don't select "with special offers" or else you'll get ads

I'd buy a Kindle but I think they're too small (my eyesight isn't the best in the first place) for me.

Yeah, the baseline now has a backlight. I'm guessing that kinda makes the Paperwhite version not as good as an upgrade? Other than the resolution boost from 167 to 500 ppi

I have an oasis, I use it quite often and quite enjoy it. Having said that I'm not sure it was really worth the bigger over a paperwhite. I'd certainly recommend a paperwhite over regular one though. It's not a massive difference, so if you really need to save money the regular will do, but I'd get the paperwhite if you can afford it.

Are you referring to the current paperwhite and regular editions, where they both have backlights? Just asking because apparently the older versions of the regular didn't have a backlight, so wanted to be sure that was accounted for when recommending paperwhite over regular.

Before the most recent update, the basic model didn't have a light, so the Paperwhite would usually be the one most often recommended. but they both have a light now, so the only differences are some higher resolution in the paper white (which I'm not sure how obvious it is) and waterproofing. The Oasis has a lot of quality-of-life features like adaptive backlighting, but I don't think tis worth the extra price.

Also worth noting is that the e-ink display doesn't show colours so a lot of comics are going to be a little less enjoyable to read if you're interested in that. Most comics can still be read, but with the colours its not as enjoyable.

Also the kindles don't have a backlight, they have a front-light so the lights aren't pointing towards your face and they're less of a strain on your eyes.

Yes, the better resolution is nice as is the higher storage. I suppose if you stick pure to regular ebooks neither of those matter a done, but if you read manga or audiobooks on it then the storage matters. Any images will be better on paperwhite.
I have the original kindle fire. Its so fucking slow I cant download any books anymore

All of this. The backlight is definitely a must, anything else not worth the price IMO. Also kindle screen is nothing like your phone's screen. It is designed to mimic paper so it won't burn out your eyes with prolonged reads.

All of the kindle models have backlights now, so that's not exactly an issue. I would still recommend the Paperwhite for the increased resolution though. According to reviews at least, its a world of difference.
Paperwhite is not backlit. Its frontlit. Important distinction.
