That's just plain not true. Off the top of my head; Horror Punk, Celtic Punk, Oi!, Street Punk, Psychobilly, Crust Punk, Hardcore, Dance Punk, Post-Punk, etc.
Pop punk, emo, post hardcore, math rock, surf punk, ska punk, skate punk, power pop...
Yeah punk is just as varied as metal. One of the only other genres like that.
