Are chalkboards dead?

In that Mr. Feeny topic he is unsurprisingly writing on a chalkboard.

However I don't think I've seen a classroom with a chalkboard in a long time. The only exception being college classrooms with the multiple layer chalkboards that slide up and down. Those aren't used in standard classrooms though. Are chalkboards dead?

Technically, they are neither living nor dead.

To answer your question though, there were chalkboards at the college I went to over six years ago. Take that as you will.

I had the hardest time buying a chalkboard. I wanted one for the barn so that I could keep track of the hay inventory and how often the farrier visits. Since it would be in a semi-outdoor environment (out of the rain, but not climate controlled, temperature ranging from 0 to 100F, variable humidity, and very dusty/dirty), a dry erase board wouldn't last very long, but a chalkboard would be fine.

I havent seen one in a classroom since the late 90s, and I work in classrooms.
I haven't been inside of a school for over 25 years, so I couldn't tell you.

My college was almost entirely whiteboards at the time though.

U of M and MSU are still a mix of chalk & white boards. I know one of them schools I went to as a kid had chalk boards, but I'm not sure if they replaced them or not. I'll check when my daughter gets to that school. I'll let you know in 3.5 years.
Some of the schools around here still had chalkboards when I did a Novell to Active Directory migration in 2011. Of course, they were also still using Novell, so that probably explains it.

I like chalk better than the markers. Sure the markers are fun to smell.

even dry erase might be dying; I was at my aunts school a couple summers back and was about to write on the white board and was told not to because it's not a white board it was some sort of smart-screen.

I have a chalkboard in my office, but it is dual sided with a whiteboard on the other side. I just prefer the chalkboard side because they are easier to maintain.

My highschool was chalkboards, but I don't think I saw a single one in college (2002 - 2006). Not sure what you kids are using now.

I prefer whiteboards and digital boards because I don't like the texture of chalkboards lol

scratching a chalkboard isn't that bad

what's really bad is rubbing a wet balloon

That only works on slate chalkboards. Mine Is basically like a whiteboard, just with black glossy paint instead of white.

I actually graduated from highschool in 2006 but even as far back as 2nd grade in the mid 90s, my teacher had a dry erase board. In fact, I hadn't seen a classroom with just a chalkboard since 1st grade in the early 90s. But that was a at a different school and different town. I'll go head and admit I was held back from 1st grade because of the school system refusing to put me in a multiage classroom. I also couldn't do my junior year til later cause of having a manic episode in 2004.
