Gaining an hour of sleep is nice but moving the clock back is messed up

Poll of the Day » Gaining an hour of sleep is nice but moving the clock back is messed up
Who thought it would be a good idea to make it so the sun sets earlier at the point where it naturally sets earlier? Who wants it getting dark at 5 instead of 6? If anything we should set the clocks back in the spring so sunset is more consistent through the year

It's been this way your whole life. Stop complaining about it now to seem cool.

There should be permanent Daylight Savings Time but you can't do that legally so just move all the time zones forward by 1 and stop switching the clocks back and forth

But without moving the clock back, sunrise would currently be at 8 am instead of 7, and in January the sun would rise at almost 9 am.

Don't move the clocks at all. I don't care about gaining an hour. Everything starting later sucks.

If a business opened at 7am before daylight savings, it still opens at 7am after daylight savings.

There is no absolute measurement of time. If you're going to choose a different frame of reference from everyone around you and then be bothered that your decision to be different resulted in a difference, why stop at just one hour? You could instead be bothered that it's coming out at 4 pm three days later and be just as logically justified.

See, I'm the opposite: It gets significantly easier for me to get up in the morning if the sun is up, and the sun setting earlier doesn't make me any more tired than setting later does. Others feel differently, having no problems with darker mornings but being more tired in the evening if it gets darker earlier.

This is a big part of why daylight savings never goes away. There's plenty of consensus that it should stop (it's not universal, but it's enough to carry some weight), but nobody can ever agree on which time to stop on.

I care about sunrise. It sucks having to go out to feed the animals and do my exercise in the dark.

I'd rather things came out earlier than later.

So why not decide that tomorrow is December 4th so MP4 is out? Or that it's now 2028 so the PS6 comes out tomorrow?

All of time is an arbitrary measurement from an arbitrary reference point. "Sooner" exists only alongside another arbitrary measurement from another arbitrary reference point.

I agree with that, this only matters because we have decided what time everything happens every day and it's easier to adjust the clocks every 6 months than adjust those schedules over the year

Also because the sun moves a lot in the north or south, at the equator this literally has zero relevance

I think we should just do away with time zones entirely. If it is full sunlight at 12AM, or pitch black at 2PM, then so be it.

The human body has a circadian rhythm so this won't work unless you constantly shift the schedule of everything throughout the year

I get this but it would be weird defining a new day while you're already in one. We have midnight as the start of a new day because people generally are asleep by then.

If we standardized it so everyone used the same time (let's say UTC) then a new day (Wednesday is becoming Thursday) would start in the evening in the Americas. Which would be really confusing.

Screw it. We should just eliminate time all together. We can go back to the day starts at sunrise and ends at sundown.

That's no more arbitrary a shift in the reference point than it would be to jump ahead a month.

When the Catholic Church switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, they skipped forward 10 days! The day after October 4th, 1582, was October 15th. By the 20st century, the difference between the two calendars was over 13 days.

The Julian calendar defined a year as exactly 365.25 days, while the Gregorian calendar defines it as 365.2425. While the difference is small, it added up to about 1 day per 128 years. A true solar year is 365.2422 days. The difference between the Gregorian and solar years adds up to 1 day per 3,030 years, however, due to precession of the equinoxes it actually comes out to 1 day per 7,700 years with respect to the vernal equinox.

The reference point was the clocks changing again for no reason.

There's no reason for Daylight Savings to exist. Just get rid of it so we can keep everything earlier.
