A lot of electronics and appliances have protection plans you can pay extra for. Do you?

I, personally, don't. The vast majority of my stuff lasts beyond the protection period, so it would usually just be a waste of money.

That or its designed to last just outside that warranty. Usually i don't day 1 beta test and you can get a general sense if something is reliable by then.

Nope. Usually if something is defective in the first month or so normal warranties will cover returns no matter what, and if it lasts beyond that it'll probably last long enough to make separate extended warranties a waste of money.

Plus, my previous credit card used to offer an automatic 1-year warranty on all electronics purchases, which pretty much covered all the bases.

They dont really exist here.
I don't think it's a thing here either (Netherlands, Europe) but it'd be an instant no thank you from me if it were. I'm assuming that what the law does not enforce, it'd be foolish to spend extra on.

The two times I've rented a car in the USA back when I drove, I turned down all extra insurance also, figured that *if* I got the car damaged, I'd cover it. Haven't needed to an either occasion.

That's one of the rare cases I do take it, unless it's a rental where my credit card already provides extra insurance. While it's very unlikely that anything happens, damage to cars can add up very quickly if it does, and the extra insurance is often a pretty nominal amount. If I were renting cars regularly enough for it to add up to a meaningful amount, I might skip it, but once every couple years? I'll take the added peace of mind.

Its a complete waste of money. The retailers push push push it because its nothing but pure profit for them. They're just banking on the fact that 2 years from now if the item breaks you'll just toss it in the trash and forget about it as opposed to coming back to get it repaired. I worked at an electronics retailer like 15 years ago and they were always asking how much extended warranties we sold.
I buy additional insurance through my own policy for items. For instance I have one that will replace my phone if damaged thats only like 8 bucks a month, and using it wont' increase my premiums.

I do for my critical PC parts (CPU, GPU, MOBO) because I've had 3 GPU upgrades due to this in the past when they would end up dying after about 5 years.

I also got it for my home A/C which really came in handy for a while when I had a series of problems happen year after year. Sadly that ran out so all of the visits and parts that used to be free would now cost me.

They're typically a scam, only really worth it if the product you're using is under constant duress for whatever reason.

Generally no, but earlier this year I took a tv I'd had back to Best Buy after using it for nearly 4 years and got a full refund for it minus the extended warranty's price. Bought a new tv online, but I'll likely go back to BB when I need/want another tv.

At that point they should have just replaced the entire unit.

Sometimes.

Like my TV, I live in they middle of nowhere, the TV is huge, and it doesn't fit in my car.
So when they said their extended warranty includes in home pickup, yeah it's worth it. Because I can't realistically use the manufacturer's warranty anyways.

I bought the protection plan on my S90D OLED TV for sure. It protects against burn in and any accidental damage. Of course it's one a one time use Mulligan, but I ain't going to be able to afford another TV if something happened to it lol
