Well, that was damn expensive

My Retroid Pocket 3+ died a few weeks ago, no longer charging as it should, and finally got together the cash for the current Pocket 5 model since I couldn't just get another 3+. On the bright side, this one runs PS2 games well, so I might finally try some of the RPGs never released in New Zealand. That will be nice.

Just a bit over NZ$550 dropped on this, though the SD card doesn't help, even they work out a lot cheaper than local pricing for the same item.

This topic will chronicle my wait for it to arrive from China. I imagine I'll be climbing the walls by tomorrow. I fucking hate package tracking.

I've been waiting for one that can do PS2/GC/PSP, but ultimately I probably wouldn't use it much, I just think it's neat.

Also you say it quit charging? A shame I couldn't get my hands on it, it's a bit of a hack fix but you could throw your own l-ion charging board in there.

I don't know if it is the battery or port. It was charging but not every time I plugged it in, and that lasted several weeks.

As for replacing the battery, gotta do soldering with some board from the original battery, and just more bullshit than I could deal with. They make you send in the system for battery related issues, and the 3+ model is discontinued anyway.

As for PS2 / GameCube, that works fine on the 5, PSP ran on my old 3+.

Heck, PS3 may soon be an option on this. So that is interesting, even if I don't really need it (PS3 never had region lock issues to deal with, I was able to buy US games on a US PSN account for years).

SteamDeck still isn't an option here. They finally added Australia a few weeks ago, but even though Gaben spent a year or so hiding from Covid down here, NZ can't buy them. As the the ROG, it is too bloody expensive. I'm also not a fan of how big those systems tend to be due to joints hurting after a while, so a lighter system was the choice for me (another reason I wish I could just get another 3+, smaller and lighter than the current models). Can actually play it for longer.

I'm also interested in Android myself, so the PC style options don't really help there. I'm already using BlueStacks to play FGO while I'm down a decent Android device, but it likes to crash a few times a day. I'd like something a bit more stable. -_-

In the same niche of emulation focused Android devices, the AYN Odin range of hardware is the high point though. Sadly expensive enough where you should perhaps look at spending the extra just for the handheld PC.

Dragged myself out of bed this morning and checked the tracker. Package made it to NZ and is heading from Auckland down to Wellington. Maybe it could be delivered tomorrow. :)

I've played this game so much in the past that I should notice any problems. And so far, there is one . Pausing the game results in a graphical glitch and display a single colour background rather than the game world. Once unpaused, it works as it should. I can ignore that.

im not so sure i would trust a SanDisk sd card from one of those places

less so one that has chinese on it with a galaxy s4 background

The last one was an official one that is still working fine 2 years later, but I otherwise wouldn't buy them online myself. But NZ is fucking expensive for these things. The closest I can get to what I bought here in NZ is Max Memory branded, for 3 times the price.

I honestly trust the Retroid guys to send me a better one than Max Memory.
