I'm not on Instagram, but I generally assume all comment sections rapidly degenerate to the same level absent aggressive moderation.
Instagram has been like this for a long time. There's even meme edits featuring comments on both Insta and Tik-tok of the same video; the instagram videos are much worse lol.

No, you're confused. The lunatics are on LUE. That's a different quarantined board.

If you think that is bad, you should read some of the crap on Threads.

Holy crap, I can't believe anyone thought that would replace Twitter.

I've literally never seen a comment section on any public forum that pushes content via algorithm that wasn't infested with some quantity of utterly idiotic comments or discourse.

Probably because commenting takes very little effort, requires no qualifications, and because people who are extremely uneducated tend to readily and very confidently opine on any and everything.

Forums like these weren't that bad, the problem lies with everyone wanting to get attention by literally having "Like" "Dislike" and "Award" features. That's what killed the comment section, to one end it helps with their algorithm and stuff, on the other hand we get people literally abusing the system by trying to get their attention by any means necessary.

I always roll my eyes on other comment sections that have "edits" to the edit's on a post that went viral alternating their opinion or "thanking" them for that much attention. lol. dude it's annoying honestly.

I've never been to Instagram, but Youtube comments aren't even bad on an overall scale. Communities vary vastly and some videos attract better people than others. I very rarely see bad comments anymore because I don't find myself going to videos that attract those kinds of people. If you think Youtube comments are bad, that just says more about the kind of content you watch.
Really depends on the video youre watching, there are a lot of wholesome and funny youtube comments

It's the same as everywhere. Big popular videos are trash self-aggrandizing nonsense, smaller videos are great.

Then you are probably part of the problem.

...conversely, you stick to highly curated content and avoid the larger ecosystem as much as possible, meaning you miss 99% of the problems. But if you do that, most social media is fine. Reddit is fantastic if you only stick to very specific boards, but it's an utter abomination if you spend any time on larger public subreddits or ever look at the front page. Even Twitter is fine if you avoid most political hashtags or public discourse and just stick to an incredibly narrow band of posters. The worst aspects of any given social media platform tend to be the most open and general, as opposed to more specific niche content.

But there's always the argument that if you don't notice biases and problematic thinking, it's because you share them. As they say, fish don't know what "wet" is.

My experience is that Twitter bombards me with right-wing stuff, and Threads bombards me with general political stuff (and of course Zuckerberg is AI-obsessed scum).

Bluesky lets me control the content I see with custom feeds dedicated to different topics, and even in my Discover feed not as much political nonsense makes its way in.

It also doesnt sell my info like Twitter and Threads do.

If that's your perspective than Twitter is worse by a metric fuckload. They're all trash though.

they can get kinda dumb but they're rarely if ever horribly toxic and nasty from what i've seen. i'd put them a step above pretty much any "real" social media simply for that.

That's only because YouTube will shadow ban comments a lot of the time.
