This was a different era.

TBH the first part of RotJ where they are battling Jabba the Hutt is the best part of the OT, and therefore the best part in any Star Wars movie
try to take the best of me go away

I didn't see the premiere, but I saw it in a theater in 1983. My local theater did a deal where they showed the first movie one weekend, the second one the next weekend, and then RotJ once it was fully released.

So I basically saw all the original films in the theater over the span of about two weeks. It was fantastic.

Ehhh.

It's not even the best part of RotJ.

And RotJ isn't really the best OT film when taken as a holistic whole.

That's a great scene but not even best in that movie, the best part is Luke vs the Emperor and Vader

I know a guy who saw Empire Strikes Back when it first came out and someone leaving the theatre before he went in said "I can't believe the oldest spoiler in cinema history "
What would Bligh do?
My brother went to see this with my grandfather, he was 9 at the time. I was 3 and only saw the OT later, probably still in the 80's the first time.

I *was* blindsided by the famous ESB spoiler at the time, but that's easy to do with a kid. Our equivalent of Santa Claus took me a while to figure out also.

I mean, the era of people lining up for hours to see a blockbuster only ended like ~10 years ago, due to the advent of the internet, pre-selecting seats, and the like.

Wasn't it the dark knight rises shooting that got rid of the midnight showings?

That, and theatre-going has kind of tanked since 2020, thanks to people falling out of the habit when Covid meant they couldn't go, streaming meaning it's easier and cheaper to just wait to watch it at home later, and people having less disposable income across the board for things like going to movies.

I remember going to a midnight showing of one of the Star Wars prequels. I can't actually remember which one it was though, which is probably a damning indictment in and of itself.

No. They still do those for MCU films.
