I dont even know how to respond to this. Like, yeah, the podracing scene is cool, but Jar Jar? Midi-chlorians?? Hes out here quoting Yippee! unironically and saying Darth Maul is the best villain of all time.

Do I just let him enjoy it? Or do I sit him down and explain why hes wrong? Help me, fellow parents/Star Wars fanshow do I navigate this?

Also, am I a bad parent for letting him watch it before Empire Strikes Back ?

considering he's a child, it is actually likely it's the greatest film he's ever seen

raytan and Kana are on opposite ends of the Awesome Spectrum.
Let him watch the rest of the core Star Wars films, and other movies so that he can form his own opinion over time. After you watch all of the Star Wars films, you could explain to him that many people find Phantom Menace to be one of the weaker Star Wars films, and why that is the case.

Just telling him his opinions are wrong and what he should like has a high probability of backfiring.

Also, how old is this kid? Depending on age, it might affect how you go about this.

Congrats on taking your son to his first film

You
Sounds like you ruined that one. Try to do better with the next one.
Show him more films then if it bothers you so much?

I enjoyed it when I first saw it and still do if I skip the senate parts.

I like jar jar and I'm a 40 year old man

With your sig, youre not exactly an authority figure on good taste. Your kids doing alright for now considering how much worse it easily couldve been.

When you look at it in the context of the full 9 films plus the two spin offs it is probably in the top half. If you can get over the wooden acting there's a lot to enjoy.

I'm no star wars purist or mega fan so the midichlorians never bothered me. It actually kinda makes sense that the advanced pre-empire civilization would be able to identify some kind of genetic marker that makes some people more force sensitive. And then after the collapse people reverted back to thinking it was magic or divine or whatever.

Jar jar is weird but not inherently any more weird than some of the stuff in any of the other films. Like that little dude who sits next to Jabba and just laughs.
