It would depend on what type of site it was. For low security sites I don't see any issue in using emails but for anything more secure I'd want a dedicated username.
I would probably use something existing and well established like OpenLDAP. I think it uses e-mail, but I have only used it for sites that host their own e-mail servers so IDK.

imo email shouldn't be required at all unless it's a chosen backup option (you of course need one, but it doesn't have to be The Thing your entire account's tied to)

giving minor perks or updates for registering email, that's fair game. but even with burner emails I squint at anything requiring emails

idk what you're doing but look into logging in via google or steam or something?

It's a blogging / social-networking site of sorts, which at the moment will not ask users for any sensitive information like credit card numbers.

If it's just guest posting, email is fine. The risk of exposing one's email is theirs to take. But if a regular poster wants to keep their email incognito, and prefers username, then this method should be available.
