Doesn't it have a million sub-genres that are alive and well? Not sure what is meant by "rock n roll" exactly.

It could mean multiple things honestly. I'm sure the people who made songs about it didn't have same the same definition for it

Yes there are rock bands that are successful today. That's not the question though.
