Thats right, Im playing Tales of Symphonia! Getting all the summon spirits. In the Shadow temple, just have that and Luna and Aska left I believe. I should have replayed this game sooner, liking it a lot. Kinda feeling like playing Vesperia or Berseria next, never played either of those. Ive played Phantasia, Symphonia, Abyss and Xillia previously. I remember literally nothing about Xillia. Not sure if I want to revisit that one or not.

Do Vesperia after Symphonia.

I played Symphonia and thought it was extremely mid. I just don't think action-rpg combat works well when applied to a traditional party-based JRPG. It's like 90% button mashing (and lots of screaming out move names over eachother)
What would Bligh do?
I am a PS3 era fan. Vesp, Graces, and Xillia were all so good.
Symphonia was my first Tales of game. Seen it at the rental store and figured why not. I ended up liking it well enough to ask my folks to get it for me for Christmas. I've still got my copy for the Gamecube.

I ended up playing a bunch more over the years since then, including Legendia (didn't care for it), Vesperia (really good), Abyss (pretty good), Tempest (sucked), Innocence (good, but the dungeons are pretty bad), and Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (meh). I ended up buying Tales of Zestiria on Steam (via a sale) many years ago, but I've yet to dive into it (I've heard fans are mixed on it, but I've no idea why).

If I had to pick, I'd also go with Vesperia next.

Symphonia is a bit dated now but the Tales games being party-based are why I like them. The latter entries focus on making every character fun to play rather than just the melee ones. Vesperia is my favorite overall but Graces and Xillia 2 have top-notch combat, and button mashing on the higher difficulties will get you killed. There's still lots of screaming out move names but that's a great way to enhance battles against bats and crabs
Delicious and vicious, while maliciously nutritious.
Holy fuck Ymir forest is one of the most annoying dungeons in any game ever. Who thought this was a good idea

Haha, it really is. Probably my most disliked part of the game.

I've done that dungeon literally dozens of times and always had to backtrack back when I was singularly obsessed with playing nothing but this game

Symphonia entered my collection in 2008 when I bought a co-worker's old GameCube and games. Definitely tagged that as something to play. It has been 16 years, but I have not gotten around to it yet.

I've beaten Legendia (except no postgame and in this case, that's at least half the game) and Abyss, and got far into Phantasia.

Destiny Director's Cut and Graces both use the CC system instead of MP/TP, which makes them my favorites. Malik's also my favorite non-protagonist to play, as a hybrid ranged attacker/spellcaster

I don't like Besaria's combat. I feel like it is overly complicated and clunky.

I went around and got all the Devils Arms. Did some of the Arena. And did some Grade grinding. Gonna try to kill Abyssion tomorrow then beat the game after. I might do another quick run through after.

If I remember right it only counts against you if you use gels in battle. Feel free to use them from the menu elsewhere. Also make sure Genis in your party for the fight with Pronyma (her fight is the endpoint of the challenge) otherwise I'm pretty sure you won't get it even if you qualified.

Tah-rah-rah-boom-dee-aaay, did you get yours todaaay? I got mine yesterdaaay, that's why I walk this way.

Sometimes I feel like the only person who doesn't hate Ymir forest, lol, but I can see how it could cause problems if you don't have a really good memory for things because otherwise you'll end up back and forthing a LOT.

I've played most of the main Tales of games except for the Destiny 2, Rebirth, and Tempest (I get the distinct impression Tempest would be at the bottom of my list if I played it), but I also haven't played certain versions of games (ps1 destiny, DS Hearts/Innocence, some versions of Phantasia).

My favorites list goes something like:
Abyss > Berseria/Symphonia > Eternia/Innocence R > Vesperia > Graces F > Xillia 1-2 > Phantasia > Legendia > Arise > Hearts R > Destiny R > Symphonia 2 > Zestiria

Abyss has some dated gameplay but it's irrelevant to me; I like it's story the most by far so it's my favorite. Eternia, Innocence R, and Vesperia have pretty good qualities all around and some great qualities but some things hold them back a bit which keeps them out of the top 3 for me. The rest are a bit more nebulous. Graces and the Xillias have rough stories but their combat is really fun, however these games mark a downturn in level design that can't be overlooked and that's why they're below Graces F. Phantasia actually surprised me with how much I liked its story, but its gameplay holds it back. Legendia has a lot of issues but I think it had the potential to be one of the best; unfortunately it didn't get the budget it deserved and it shows, but if it ever gets remade, I think it has a lot to offer, and a great OST.

Arise was hyped a lot and ended up disappointing me as it retreaded a lot of old ground in the series and, imo, did it worse than much older games; I think I only liked 1 party member by the end of things, too, and I didn't care much for many of the new mechanics. Hearts R has fantastic gameplay but I did not care for the plot at all, and the cast made me want to throttle them most of the time, which is not great.

Destiny R, like Arise, was hyped up a lot, so I was very, very disappointed by it, and found characters who I was told were amazing to be extremely lacking- like Hearts R, the gameplay was good, but if I'm not enjoying the story, it doesn't mean much, and worse still, the game's story nose-dives later on, becoming more and more vapid and empty- I had expected the story to at least be better than Phantasia's, and imo, it wasn't. DotNW needs no explanation, it's garbage, but for some reason I actually kind of like it, so it's my guilty pleasure, and as such it doesn't get last place. That's Zestiria. I have never wanted to murder the camera in a Tales of game before. If that was my only problem, it would still be the worst Tales of game, but it's not. Combat is shit. Customization is shit. Story is weak. Cast is mostly obnoxious and boring. At least the music is good.
Hi
Killed Abyssion! Gonna do some Grade grinding, look around for more titles and side stuff to get, then beat the game. Not sure how much Grade I really need? Currently have about 1250. I know you get 1000 for beating the game. I dont know that I need x10 exp for my next playthrough? But I also know everything you spend in the grade shop gets refunded in the next run after.

Ex Skills was a favorite of mine to get Concentrate on casters (plus anything else I found fun) early; Titles adds pretty huge boosts to your stats over time and getting the Colosseum titles isn't too hard to take advantage of it

Combo Exp is actually pretty worth it. A 10-hit combo will make you get normal experience and a 100 hit combo will make you get 10x experience (normally, a 100 hit combo would double your exp). It leads to boss battles with a lot of bonus experience

Those plus all the cheap things are what I'd aim for on first NG+

Is it worth rebuilding Luin in NG, or is that more of an NG+ goal?

It's strictly a gald sink for weapons so if you feel like farming some gald go for it

I farmed some kind of earth dragons somewhere I think

edit: It is probably still worth it just to wrap everything up plotwise (it's canon to ToS2 and is a major location) though tbh. No reason specifically to wait for NG+, you could even rebuild it in the middle of the game

I've honestly been struggling to get into tales games since Vesparia.

Xillia was fun, though I didn't really feel like doing another playthrough.
Xillia 2 was kinda weird, but not bad.
Tales of Graces was friendship is magic the game
Tales of Zestria was a mistake
Tales of Berseria was fun but I had no idea what the bloody hell i was doing i just button mashed and won the game
Tales of Arise tried really hard to be edgy. that first area was like "WTF man" and then they toned it really far down and I was like "Huh" and then they got into super edgy again, and then the final cutscene was just a euphemism for sex.

Tales of Arise was the shadow the hedgehog of tales games.
