Or to put it another way, stop obsessing over the things you have no real power over and which ultimately don't affect you as much as you think anyway, and just live your life. Appreciate what you have, and the beauty that exists in the world, rather than always focusing on the shit side of the coin. There is both beauty and ugliness in the world, and that's been true for every human who's ever lived.

You're living in the golden age of your species. You have access to amenities and abilities the likes of which literal emperors in the past couldn't even have dreamed of. To most humans, you have pretty much godlike power and privilege. People in the past would have happily slaughtered millions just to be you .

Act like it.

Don't wallow in artificial negativity because the Internet tells you to. Stop doomsaying, doomscrolling, and trauma wanking. Learn to appreciate what there is, and if you're still bothered by the worst aspects of modern society than find a fulfilling life doing what you can to leave the world a slightly better place when you leave it than it was when you came into it. That's all any human can really do.

Everything has always sucked, forever. That's the nature of existence. But everything is also awesome, if you let it be, and learn to see it.

hmm, there's a LOT more ugliness though. and it's really only brain chemistry that lets you even perceive the good parts. the reality of things is actually WAY worse otherwise.

This attitude is literally how to be happy.

The best way to be happy is to not worry about whether or not you're happy.

It's been implied the most content cultures on Earth were the ones who didn't really have a concept of "happiness", so they never worried about trying to be happy, or if they weren't happy "enough", or if their happiness was shallow or "undeserved", and so on.

The more we think about happiness as an ideal, the more miserable we make ourselves.

One of the best ways to actually be happy is to not try to be happy. Settle for contentment and learn to appreciate the little things and the shining moments when they come. People who chase bliss are far more likely to wind up hating everything.

No need to tell me. I am happy. I love my life.

Dont get me wrong, that doesnt mean Im completely happy every second of every day, but Im happy most of the time and in the odd moments where things are trickier Ive always got something cool on the horizon so it doesnt bother me too much.

There are fleeting moments of happiness but they only ever last for brief moments. The best you can hope for is driving away the all consuming despair and retreat into the comfort of numbness.

But yes there are moments where the sadness seems to surface for no discernable reason. I recommend making cookies when that happens.

In the past, yes. Once I started having real life responsibilities (living alone abroad, having a meaningful adult job, long-term relationship) it mostly went away. Then when I started weightlifting that put a complete end to it. I've had some significant life challenges from then until now but I haven't felt anything close to hopeless in nearly a decade.

"Life is actually pretty great" says the man from the comfort of the home he owns and has fully paid off, whose stable, well-paying career ensures all of his basic needs are met. "Sure, maybe you can't afford food, but you're still probably eating more than Irish peasants did when they ran out of potatoes. Don't be so negative!"

That's some pretty hardcore "let them eat cake" shit right there.

By and large, people aren't trying for bliss. They're trying for exactly that contentment: a comfortable, stable existence with few major problems. That comfort and stability, however, is well out of reach for a great many people, and keeps getting harder to achieve with every passing year as corporations continue to engineer cost of living crises that are exceptionally profitable for them. People are not wrong to chase more stability than they have, nor are they wrong to despair when their best efforts aren't enough to reach the carrot before the stick gets longer.

If you've gotten to the point where you have that stability? Good for you. That's when you have the option of burying your head in the sand and ignoring the problems that other people continue to face. If you come up for air periodically, though, you'll notice that that's a luxury many people do not have, and there's considerable overlap between that group and the group of people that are unhappy with the state of the world.

No, theyre stating facts. Maybe your situation is bad. Nobody is trying to claim that life is perfect for everybody, but it is absolutely true that the average person now has opportunities and access to luxuries that the vast majority of people throughout history have not had. Rather than recognise that, you turn it all woe is me!

By and large, people absolutely are trying for bliss. This is why you have plenty of people who are not happy no matter what they get.

Being unhappy with your own situation and claiming that everything sucks are two different things. Nobody is saying you cant acknowledge your own problems. I have problems myself, as does everybody else. Ive experienced some of the problems youre complaining about firsthand too. However, at no point did I claim that everything sucked or that the world was rotten all the way through. When you do that, thats your attitude that youre choosing to project onto the world.

I can see some of yours and his perspective. Yes, the modern developed world enjoys a level of amenities and comfort for the average person that never existed in any era prior. But also, I just received a 1250 dollar bill to have my balls checked out when I'm insured and was referred to have them checked out. While I can afford to pay it, a lot of people could not. The US infrastructure is fucked and a lot of people are barely surviving and can't even afford to find out if they're dying or not
On top of that, as a parent, I can't even rely on my child being safe when I send them to school every day

This is one of the better Ted Talks I've listened to.

But honestly, I think one of the worst things people are doing to themselves in this day and age is staying too connected to the internet, in whatever form it may be. For Lent, I made the decision to give up Youtube and Reddit, and during that time, I felt a very palpable cleansing of my mind. I experienced noticeably less feelings of doom and gloom, almost as if I were on a drug or something. And the effects probably would have been even greater if I gave up the internet entirely, but I was too scared to commit to that. So take that as one piece of anecdotal advice.

Yeah, pretty much. Obviously, it's nice that we're no longer living in thatch huts and needing to have 27 kids to stand any chance of one surviving to adulthood, but there are still a lot of very serious problems that no amount of "there are starving kids in Africa" is going to make go away. A rapidly increasing number of people are separated from homelessness only by the fact that their current landlord hasn't decided to cash in on the exploding real estate market, basic costs of living have inflated far faster than wages have kept up with, several minority demographics are having their right to exist hotly debated in the culture war that modern politics has devolved into, a massive portion of the job market is in the verge of being made obsolete by AI with no contingency plan in the works for ensuring the world can handle decoupling productivity from employment to such an extent...

Yes, there's also a lot to enjoy and be thankful for, but those who can ignore the larger problems and just be content with that are in a place of considerable privilege.
