Why has weapons and armor technology not advanced since WWII?

For all of human history we'd make a new weapon, then make new armor to counter said weapon, then new weapons to counter said armor, and repeat. Now it's just faster/bigger/deadlier versions of what we had in WWII. Where is the innovation? Where is the pizzazz?

If you don't count literally the entire history of computers and their use in warfare, sure.

Unmanned drones are pretty innovative.
And with that... pow! I'm gone!
There has been a considerable improvement in both armor and weapons since WWII. Things like ceramics, composites, and reactive armor didn't exist back then.

And to counter that there have been new designs such as sabot rounds, explosive-formed penetrators, and tandem-charge rounds, not to mention considerable improvements in guidance and accuracy.

To be clear, drones are currently the most effective weapon right now.
And "you can execute a precision strike without putting a person in harm's way" is a pretty massive paradigm shift, not just "bombers, but better."

Because no one wants to use them as a weapon anymore.

There's diminishing returns on how well a bullet can kill someone so all the good stuff got channeled into nerf and super soaker rnd.
New weapons are pretty damn terrifying honestly. Those drones.

You guys are focusing too much on the weapon side and not enough on the armor side. Armor has been lacking for a while. It's been how long and we still don't have armor that can defend against bullets the same way full body plate armor defended against swords. Pretty much all previous weapons had armor that countered it but we still haven't figured that out yet for bullets and bombs. I would love to see armor that can stop bullets and bombs so we can go back to melee combat and get innovative with our weapons again instead of this impersonal stasis that we've been in that makes killing too easy. Guns and bombs are uncivilized and detachs people from the killing they do, which in turn makes it easier to kill more people unnecessarily.

We absolutely have body armor that can stop a bullet.
It's also heavy and expensive.
There's that danger ring. That it's better to not be where the attack is. So we put the money in stealth and other advantages instead.
And the Ukraine war proves this in a huge way. With an 8 to 1 casualty rate and Ukrainian casualties have a higher chance of survival.

That's what I want, yes. Things would be better if you couldn't just shoot/bomb your enemies with no regard. It makes it easier to make the decision to kill when it's from a distance and you can just dehumanize them.

I'd love to have infinite energy too, that would be great.
It's a shame we have to live in reality.

We'll eventually invent armor to stop projectile weapons, it's just probably gonna take a while, and probably won't be energy shields.

Try watching a trench invasion video. It's knife fight range and it's still inhuman. War is inhuman.
It's pretty scary too because rules of engagement, you have to watch if the guy you just pressed your gun into is trying to surrender or not.

What if we invented a suit that makes you run fast, and if you run directly into the bullet at a faster speed you're able to propel it backwards into the shooter, like Sisyphus pushing a boulder up a mountain

Compared to the current state-of-the-art reactive armor, which weighs 10 to 20 tons.

This may come as a shock to you, but military research tends to be driven by what's the most useful for maximizing enemy losses and minimizing friendly ones, not by concerns about how personal or impersonal warfare feels for the people doing the fighting. If anything, the military benefits from it being easier to dehumanize the enemy and choose to kill them, since it reduces the risk of soldiers hesitating. Your vague ideas of what would be cooler don't really factor into anything.

We do have much better armor now, but weapons tech tends to outclass armor very quickly. Body armor doesn't do much when someone can hit you with a tactical strike from miles away. For vehicles though, a friend of mine had his life saved by reactive armor when his Bradley was hit by a RPG in Iraq.

Yeah, the real power is who has the longer gun, and right now the US has the ability to drone strike from thousands of miles away from some 19 year old gamer bored out of his mind.

Cheap too
Look at it this way. Who needs armor when you can blow the living smithereens out of your enemy before they can fire back?
