I don't know how I used to sit through commercial breaks, so many stupid commercials and also repeated ones that you get sick of hearing

Were commercials better back in the day or what's going on?
On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
I bet you say that to all the boys...

I don't have nostalgia for commercials tho with some exceptions (like Sears Air Conditioning)

Yup, instantly remembered all of them. The second one always bugged me as a kid, felt so bad for that poor kid lmao.

In the "What's your thing?" commercial, the T-Rex sound effect guy was always the one that impressed me the most.

Another one was the "Astar the Robot" commercial made by the War Amps. This is the best quality one I could find but it includes the 80s commercial, which I wasn't familiar with.

commercials have always been crap with few exceptions.

Every now and then comes an advertising campaign that just hits with people.

I think the last set of commercials that had any kind of cultural significance were the Old Spice. Look at your man, now back at me, now back to your man, now back to me. In my hand are tickets to that show you wanted to go to. Now back at your man, back to me. etc.

Although the Terry Crew Old Spice commercials were better, they didn't get as much wide spread attention.

Before that I think the other BIG brand that went "Viral" before the internet was Budweiser's WAZZUP!.

There have been some others, but these are 2 of the biggest commercials to impact culture.

Family and kids advertisements are better, usually containing more truth or at least fun in the commercial. Cereal commercials are still really fun. The froot loops world commercials are cool looking. They're just much less annoying overall than adult commercials which seem to be manipulative in every moment

Video game ones were.

Insurance companies have kept commericals good though. I'm almost ashamed to say that the pharmecutical ads are sometimes good too.

I miss when Squaresoft (Square Enix) was the king of video game ads. You don't even have to know who Yuna from Final Fantasy is, except that once she was singing in a concert and her buddies were fighting off guards in the stands. Never had to play X-2. Yuna is just the dual-pistol bad @%# now.

Between nostalgia and the fact that I was more receptive toward commercials when I was younger, it's hard for me to say.

Kids commercials are/were no less manipulative, they just manipulate their audiences with fun colours, exciting sounds, and other things that add up to an enjoyable experience (enjoyment that makes the viewer more receptive to the product).

Nah its just nostalgia. In twenty years, people who are kids now are gonna be like were commercials better back in the 2020s?

I think fewer and fewer people are watching broadcast TV and more people are streaming now. Most of the ads I've seen on streaming have been just terrible. "Buy our product" or "Watch our show." No more fun and imaginative commercials like they used to make.

This is true even of radio. I like to listen to the Radio Classics channel on Sirius XM. Occasionally they air some of the old-time radio commercials, which are always more interesting than the modern ads they run. I'd much rather listen to a commercial about cereal shot from guns! than someone talking about cancelling your time-share contract.

Those examples above...people would type 'cringe' (yes even adults) if they released that perfection board game commercial today. People would actively try to escape the ad.

The 90s were children's wildest dreams. The 2000's The scene kid around the neighborhood. 2010 Ironic Humor. 2020 Shorts, maybe with more meta humor. I remember those commercials that way. My favorite aren't those though, I sort of like the earlier decades.

Commercials seem about the same to me completely useless and work only to make me avoid your product. They seem to be about the same quality and randomness as ever.

Perfume ads still make no sense.
Way to many drinking ads and erectile dysfunction ads. Still no one made this connection?
Today we have those dumb recycling ads spamming us that are truly terrible and remind me how much of a sham recycling is.
