When I went to youth group as a kid there was a thing (fad) called "speaking in tongues", where you would be so filled with holy energy in the middle of singing a christian song that you would start spouting random noises very loudly, and this was a "miracle" and it was theorized that it was the language that angels speak in heaven. In reality it was a bunch of middle aged women making orgasm noises in front of their kids.

My parents strongly disliked it because they weren't so radical. They thought it was actually a curse and demons from hell were causing you to make those noises and speak the language that angels speak in hell.

Anyway I may have strongly overestimated the abilities of the human mind at some point, in regards to like a chimp, or something like that. I think it's a linear descent from the dumbest humans to the smartest chimps.

Who hasn't made fun of the Last Supper?

Aren't there like dog and cat last supper pictures? Thanksgiving ones? Like... animated shows mocking it? This isn't new, they just hate LGBT+ people. The drag queen could have just stood there doing nothing and then left and they'd still be bitching.

I always thought they were insane and in love with Jesus. It explains why men never do it, as Christian men aren't the types to desire gay sex with some imaginary dude. It's interesting to see that I understood the concept of orgasm as a young child long before I learned about it. It has always been obvious to me that those women were feeling some kind of pleasure on a primal level. Their sex life is so pathetic and unsatisfying that they're giving themselves orgasms just by listening to a song. I also get goosebumps and feel a sense of euphoria or nostalgia when I listen to some powerful piece of music, but I've never had anything close to a literal orgasm.
I'm French speaking.

Yes, it was just the women, wasn't it. They were absolutely in love with Jesus. Which is understandable when your husband is a fat closeted nerd looking pencil pusher with the personality of a wet sponge and a stupid dopey fake smile on 24/7, who looks so emotionally unstable bottled up and untrustworthy you know he's one bad day away from hanging his whole family and burning the house down. You would be surprised if that guy didn't have some skeletons in his closet.

Crossdressers like to dress feminine because they feel like it, which is acres more sane than anything I've seen from these people.

And they wonder why they continue to hemorrhage followers and be mocked at every turn? All they seem capable of doing is spewing bile, and antagonizing people. Not all of them are like this of course, but the world is sick and tired of zealots foaming at the mouth and gibbering like rabid animals. Always demanding constant attention like a bratty toddler. Shut the fuck up already, and change the channel. Your opinion is irrelevant.

I can't tell if you're talking about the religious folk or the ones who put on this distasteful opening ceremony.
I saw Tim Pool complaining - not sure if his 'satanic' bit was to do with Gojira playing or the "Last Supper" bit but grow up.

I wouldn't poke at anyone's religion. That's a very sensitive subject tbh and we should all respect one another
When any religion is minding its own business, I can agree with that sentiment. When any religion goes out of its way to treat people like shit, it is deserving of criticism, backlash, and scrutiny. People are allowed to get sick of that. Respect is a 2 way street and must be earned.

There is not a single religion in existence that doesn't deserve mockery and/or derision for some part of its teachings, canon, or history. If you can't recognize that about your own religion - whatever it may be - that's because you either know very little about it or have never stopped to think critically about it.

Yeah I thought of that too that's why I deleted my post and now no longer post in any topics concerning politics race or religion. These aren't for me lol
Seems less Olympic games and more hunger games.
Yes, a drag queen did a show, and that mean's it's no longer an international sporting event but instead a dystopian murder tournament to keep the working class in line. That comment makes perfect sense and is in no way completely unhinged.

Id love to see what these religious peoples opinions were on the Charlie Hebdo attack when it happened.
As a metal fan, it was awesome seeing gojira kill it
Okay guys, I did some looking up, watched the drag performance. Um. That's not the Last Supper. There's too many people. Last Supper has a lot of symbology and stuff, in numbers and other things that's missing from the performance... However, it's not like symbolism is exclusive to Christian stuff, so I looked to see what other people were saying about the performance and:
https://x.com/Gaawachan/status/1817404311183474955

It's Greek mythology. It's not Christian. Even the lady and horse, that's this deity:

The Christians are freaking out over something that isn't even about them... again.

Gee, who would have thought that people might reference Greek mythology at the Olympics. :-/ You'd think the very Dionysis-ish crown the blue figure is wearing would have been a dead giveaway, but no. Instead they're calling that performer a "demon." Lol.
Hi
Well now that just makes the whole thing even more stupid.

As soon as I saw the gojira performance I knew the Christian right was gonna freak out and call the whole ceremony satanic and sure enough
Having drag queens in the Olympic ceremonies is the equivalent of having showgirls on the ceremonies if the Olympics were in Las Vegas. Its not really a big deal or even worth mentioning but some parents might want to shield their kids eyes I guess

Typically, Olympic opening ceremonies artistically showcase a combination of the host nation's history and culture, as well as influences from the ancient Greek Olympic tradition.

I didn't watch the entire opening ceremony, but I watched a clip of this particular part, and I have absolutely no idea what they were trying to convey with this. I can't see how anyone involved in planning or performing this could have thought for even a moment that it was going to be either entertaining or even a good idea.

I don't generally have an issue with people being critical of religion. Religions are ideas, and ideas are meant to be challenged. But there's such a thing as a time and a place. This was out of place and extremely cringy.

On a different note, having Snoop Dogg as a torch bearer, and the performances by Lady Gaga and Celine Dion similarly made little sense as they do nothing to display either France or the Olympics as a whole.

At the same time, I really don't give a shit about any of it.

Depicting Greek mythology and placing particular emphasis on the Greco-Roman goddess of the river Seine seems like it fits the bill for "showcasing the host nation's history/culture and also Greek Olympic tradition."

Totally fair if true, but then it also falls on the artistic director to display that in a way that wouldn't so clearly be misconstrued. The visual similarities to the Da Vinci painting are considerable.

What baffles me about these people is that no matter who you are and what you say you cannot pull them out of thier altered perception of reality, no amount of explaining how Drag Queens aren't pdf.files and how Drag Shows are not inherently sexual will convince them that is true.

Sure, but bear in mind that The Last Supper is one of the best-known pictures ever painted and also depicts a fairly generic setting (that is, a bunch of people participating in a meal lined up so you can see them all). It's influenced many subsequent artworks and it's not altogether surprising that any stage show meant to depict a feast would bear some resemblance to it in terms of basic structure.

Paris is one of the world's capitals of high fashion (arguably the quintessential one). Treating this high-profile public event as an opportunity to showcase some particularly unusual outfits is just leaning into that.
