For what it's worth, in the Middle Ages the idea of taking the Bible literally was seen as exceedingly uninformed, and there were many scholarly debates about what the "deeper meaning" of some of the biblical passages was and what lessons were meant to be taken from them.
The idea of Biblical literalism, where every word of the Bible is taken as both literal and true, is a relatively recent development (as in, mostly in the last 200 years) and even then is only practiced by a minority of Christians.
Kill 1 man: You are a murderer. Kill 10 men: You are a monster.
Kill 100 men: You are a hero. Kill 10,000 men, you are a conqueror!
