I enjoyed Garfield. The humor was kinda meh at times, but it was fun. I read the comics (some good, some bad), watched at least one of the cartoons (which I felt was alright at the time), the tv specials (which I still have fond memories of), and... I couldn't make it through the first live-action movie. And I've liked the merch.
If Garfield hadn't cashed in as much as it did, the overall reputation would likely be better.

it's often looked down upon compared to the likes of Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes and others, since it mostly just exists to sell merchandise
I think the character himself is endearing in a way tbh
I think it evolved to the point where merch became a big deal. However, Peanuts was big on merch, too. Most comics DO try to sell merch if they can.
C&H mostly has a hipster appeal nowadays, which kinda ruins it for me. It was probably funnier than Garfield on average, but everything has hits and misses. The Far Side is absolutely adored, but most of the jokes didn't land, either. However, Far Side had interesting art, etc, which kept it going.
