Fall and spring are just transitional states between winter and summer and never actually last 3 months, so why break it up like that?

It's based on tilt of the earth so it takes about a fourth of year to go from an equinox to a solstice

Because the solstices and equinoxes are the closest thing we have to an objective, consistent measure of when season transitions happen and any regional variance in the timing of seasons can be accounted for locally without needing to change what's written on the calendar.

It's also subjective as to what weather constitutes a season.

Most of what the US considers winter barely constitutes what I'd call fall.

I just know when you get below freezing weather on the regular, it's winter, it's been below freezing all week here. Western NY just got a shit ton of snow too, Florida is just summer and fall all year though
