Some people are prone to escalation behavior but that's not evidence of a "gateway" drug. If you want to count like using heroin to treat an opioid addiction then maybe, but marijuana doesn't physiologically produce a need for someone to try a different drug.

It used to be that marijuana was highly stigmatized, so a greater portion of people who did it would just be the type who are prone to abuse/addiction problems in general. Plus having to buy from a dealer who could be shady and pull you closer to being around harder stuff. And then there's propaganda distorting these ideas which are flawed but somewhat rooted in truth.

Now that more places are legalizing and you see "regular" people doing weed all the time, it's more obvious than ever that it was always bullshit
