Considering they almost did it while fighting the US, I'm not sure why your fucking ass just fell off.

They weren't even close. Japan is a tiny island and simply doesn't have the manpower necessary to hold down large countries like China. China knew Japan will lose eventually and decided to sabotage and fight among themselves to capture power. Without US interference the war would've been longer but Japan will lose eventually.
