Willfully taking any life without due cause should be punished with jail time or a trip to the nut house (depending). It's sad that farm animals die for our consumption, but I'm also a big supporter of buying from ethical sources and imprisoning (rather than fining) business owners who abuse their livestock. I'm grateful that something gave its life (even involuntarily) so that I could eat. I'd happily execute the abusive farmers personally.
My great-grandpa was a piece of shit who beat a horse until it was blind and dragged the neighbour's dog behind his truck until it died.
