Music: Rock or Metal?

I like some kinds of metal, but only a small percentage of subgenres are actually good. And boy does it have way too many subgenres.

Rock also has a lot of bad subgenres, but at least they tend to be poppy and nobody takes them too seriously. Metal fans will get all elitist about their favorite cookie monster band, and heaven forbid if you give it the wrong black/death/core label
