That's not using it as an insult so much as it is recognizing that this guy really doesn't want to be gay, and mocking the cognitive dissonance that would come with that in response to his open hostility. It's not that it's funny when people are gay, it's that it's funny when people end up looking like hypocrites because of fierce, self-hating denial.
Don't bother with Zeus, him and comprehension no like each other.
