That's not really that true. It can be difficult to keep track of newly-discovered side effects, since a lot of these drugs aren't well-established, but failing to notify patients about potential side effects is solid grounds for a malpractice suit, so most doctors are pretty good about it.
I know people who have suffered PSSD for up to 8 years or longer. If they're not aware by now something is seriously wrong.
